Turkish Grammar-7: Adjectives-3

You know the ablative case is "-den". If you use this together with "daha", it means "than ..."

 

But there is no need to use with "daha" everytime. It means the same even if you don´t use.

 

The word that makes an adjective superlative is "en"

 

NOMINATIVE COMPARATIVE SUPERLATIVE
- ... -den (daha) ... en ...

 

Examples:

ben (I)

konuşmak (1to speak, 2to talk)

 

Türkçe+i (accusative)----------------------->Türkçeyi

ben+den daha iyi---------------------------->benden daha iyi (better than me)

konuş+yor+sin------------------------------->konuşuyorsun (you are speaking)

 

Türkçeyi benden daha iyi konuşuyorsun. (You are speaking Turkish better than me)

It would be the same "benden iyi"

daha kısa bir yol (a shorter way)

yok mu idi----------------------------------->yok muydu? (wasn´t there?)

 

Daha kısa bir yol yok muydu? (Was there no shorter way? (direct: Wasn´t there a shorter way))

 

karmaşık (complicated)

soru (the question)

bu (this)

sınav (the exam)

kolay (easy)

 

en karmaşık soru (the most complicated question)

en karmaşık soru bu (the most complicated question is this)

bu ise---------->buysa (if this is)

en karmaşık soru buysa (if the most complicated question is this)

kolay imiş------->kolaymış

 

A: En karmaşık soru bu mu? (Is the most complicated question this?)

B: Evet. (Yep)

A: En karmaşık soru buysa sınav çok kolaymış. (If the most complicated question is this, the exam was easy) (you used "-miş" because you noticed it was easy when you saw the most complicated question)

 

yarın (tomorrow)

bu (this)

ay (1the moon, 2the month)

yağmurlu (rainy)

gün (the day)

olmak (1to be, 2to become, 3 to happen 4...5...6..7.)

 

bu ay+ki -----------------------------> bu ayki (... which is in this month)

en yağmurlu gün (the rainiest day)

ol+acak+- ----------------------------> olacak (it will be)

 

Yarın bu ayki en yağmurlu gün olacak. (Tomorrow will be the rainiest day (which is) in this month)

 

şu (that/this)

elbise (the cloth)

hoş (nice)

 

Şu elbise daha hoş. (That cloth is nicer)

 

hangi (which)

güzel (beautiful, nice)

 

hangi+miz---------------------------->hangimiz (which of us)

daha güzel (more beautiful)

zevk (the pleasure, the enjoy, the zest)

zevkli (enjoyable, funny)

Almanca, İngilizceden daha zevkli. (German is more enjoyable than English)

öğle (the midday, the noon)

öğlen, öğleyin (at noon)

kalabalık (1the crowd, 2crowded)

 

üçüncü cadde (the third street)

bu cadde (this street)

daha kalabalık (more crowded)

bu cadde+den daha kalabalık (more crowded than this street)

öğlen+leri---------------------->öğlenleri (at noons)

kalabalık+dır-------------------->kalabalıktır

 

Öğlenleri üçüncü cadde bu caddeden daha kalabalıktır. (The third street is more crowded than this street at noons.) (The task of "-dir" is to express a general feature)

ciddî (serious) (pronunciation: cid´dii)

sorun, problem, sıkıntı (the problem)

hava (1the weather, 2the sky, 3the air, 4...5...6..)

durum (1the position, 2the situation, 3the case, 4the condition)

 

en ciddî (the most serious)

en ciddî sorun (the most serious problem)

sorun+miz---------------->sorunumuz (our problem)

en ciddî sorunumuz (our the most serious problem)

hava durum+i------------->hava durumu (the weather condition)

 

Sanırım en ciddî sorunumuz hava durumu. (I think our the most serious problem is the weather condition.)

 

örnek (the example)

vermek (to give)

 

daha iyi bir örnek (a better example)

ver+r mi+sin---------------->verir misin? (do you give?)

 

Daha iyi bir örnek verir misin? (Do you give a better example?)

 

aşağı (the underneath, the underside)

bakmak (to look)

 

aşağı+a(dative)------------------------->aşağıya (to below, to underneath)

bak+dı+k------------------------------->baktık (we looked)

 

daha aşağı (more underneath, downer, lower)

bak+dı+nız mı--------------------------->baktınız mı? (did you look?)

 

A, B : Aşağıya baktık, yoktu. (We looked below, it was absent)

C: Daha aşağıya baktınız mı? (Did you look lower?)

 

ödül (the award)

herkes (everybody)

hak etmek (to deserve)

 

ödül+i(accusative)----------------------->ödülü (the award)

herkes+den (daha) çok------------------->herkesten daha çok (more than everybody)

hak et+di+k------------------------------>hak ettik (we deserve)

 

Biz ödülü herkesten çok hak ettik. (We deserved the award more than everybody)

 

Mehmet (a Turkish male name)

uzun (1long, 2tall)

uzun mu+sin------------------------------>uzun musun? (are you tall?)

çok daha ... = much ...er

 

Mehmet´ten uzun musun? (Are you taller than Mehmet?)

Mehmet´ten çok daha uzunlar. (They are much taller than Mehmet)

Hepimiz Mehmet´ten uzunuz ama Mehmet de kısa değil. (All of us are taller than Mehmet but Mehmet isn´t short, too.)

yakın (near, close (as distance))

bir yer (somewhere (direct: a place))

seçmek (to choose)

 

bu sefer, bu defa, bu kez (this time)

daha yakın bir yer (nearer somewhere, a nearer place)

seç+ecek+im------>seçeceğim (i will choose)

 

Bu kez daha yakın bir yer seçeceğim. (I will choose a nearer place this time)

 

İsveç (Sweden)

Danimarka (Denmark)

Türkiye (Turkey)

kuzey (north, northern, northside)

 

kuzey+de------------------------>kuzeyde (on the northernside)

Danimarka+den------------------>Danimarka´dan

Türkiye+den--------------------->Türkiye´den

Danimarka´dan da (also from Denmark, from Denmark too)

 

Danimarka Türkiye´den daha kuzeyde ama İsveç Danimarka´dan da kuzeyde. (Denmark is northern than Turkey but Sweden is northern than Danemark too)

 

deniz (the sea)

girmek (1to enter, 2to enter into, 3to come into, 4to join, 5...6..)

bakmak (to look)

iyi (good)

 

deniz+e(dative)------------------->denize (to the sea)

denize girmek (to have a swim (direct: to come into the sea))

-e bakmak (to look at (direct: to look to))

bakmak+den---------------------->bakmaktan

 

Denize girmek, (denize) bakmaktan daha iyi değil mi? (Isn´t it better to have a swim than looking at the sea?)

 

bura (this place, here)

bura+da-------------------------->burada (in this place, here)

oturmak (1to sit, 2to sit down, 3...4...5.)

sıkıcı (boring)

hiçbir şey (nothing)

yapmak (to do)

 

yap+ma+mak------------------->yapmamak (not to do)

burada oturmak (to sit here)

hiçbir şey yapmamak (not to do anything, to do nothing)

 

Burada oturmak sıkıcı. Hiçbir şey yapmamak daha sıkıcı. (It is boring to sit here. It is more boring to do nothing)
