Lesson2 : The Word Order and Emphasising - 1

1) Turks state the subject as first and they state the predicate in the end of the sentence. If they have something else to state, they accommodate these complements between them.

2) The standard word order of our language :

SUBJECT COMPLEMENT PREDICATE

özne : subject

tümleç : complement

yüklem : predicate

For example:

Biz hastayız. (We are sick.)

özne: biz (we)

tümleç: -

yüklem: hastayız

SUBJECT COMPLEMENT PREDICATE
Biz - hastayız.

hasta : 1sick, ill, 2patient

Biz geçen Salı´dan beri çok hastayız. (We are too sick since last Tuesday.)

özne: biz

tümleç: geçen Salı´dan beri (since last Tuesday)

tümleç: çok (1very, too, 2so, 3much, 4many)

yüklem: hastayız

SUBJECT COMPLEMENT PREDICATE
Biz

geçen Salı´dan beri

çok

hastayız

Salı: Tuesday

Onlar yalnızca Pazartesi, Çarşamba ve Perşembe günleri çalışıyor. (They just work on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.)

=Onlar yalnızca Pazartesi, Çarşamba ve Perşembe çalışıyor.

özne: onlar (they)

tümleç: yalnızca (just, only)

tümleç: Pazartesi, Çarşamba ve Perşembe (günleri) (on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday)

yüklem: çalışıyor

SUBJECT COMPLEMENT PREDICATE
Onlar

yalnızca

Pazartesi, Çarşamba ve Perşembe günleri

çalışıyor.

çalışmak: to work

Annem ve babam gece yarısı arkadaşlarımla dışarı çıkmama hiç izin vermiyor. (My mother and father never allow me to go out in the midnight with my friends.)

özne: annem ve babam (my mother and father)

tümleç: gece yarısı (midnight)

tümleç: arkadaşlarımla (with my friends) | arkadaş : friend

tümleç: dışarı çıkmama (~approximately: that I go out (pure trans.: to my going out))

tümleç: hiç (never)

yüklem: izin vermiyor[lar] (they don´t allow (in fact: they aren´t allowing) |

SUBJECT COMPLEMENT PREDICATE
Annem ve babam

gece yarısı arkadaşlarımla dışarı çıkmama

hiç

izin vermiyorlar

izin : permission ,

vermek : to give ,

izin vermek : to allow, to let (purely: to give permission)

3) Our word order is flexible. It can be changed according to what is wanted to emphasise.

The stress is at the component which locates in front of the predicate. This is not an unchangable and definite rule, this is just a general habit. If you follow this way, one can understand better what you say. Especially in speaking, people may ignore this rule because the stresses are already heard easily via intonations.

Biz hastayız. (We are sick.)

Underlining for the stress:

Biz hastayız. (We are sick.)

-->there are someones who are sick, and they are us.

Biz hastayız. (We are sick)

=Alternative : Hastayız biz. | The stress is at the predicate because it locates in the beginning.

If you want to emphasise the predicate, accommodate it in the beginning of the sentence.

Ben Türkçe öğreniyorum. (I am learning Turkish.)

öğrenmek : to learn

I´m going to underline the word to emphasise:

Ben Türkçe öğreniyorum. (I am learning Turkish.)

=Better way: Türkçe´yi ben öğreniyorum. (purely: The Turkish, ""I"" am learning. | people understand like this: There is someone who learn Turkish and that person is me, not anyone else.)

Ben Türkçe öğreniyorum. (I am learning Turkish.)

"Türkçe" locates here in front of the predicate, so it has got the stress. | This is the normal and usual type.

Ben Türkçe öğreniyorum. (I am learning Turkish.)

=Better way: Öğreniyorum ben Türkçe (This expression includes this meaning: You can´t deny that I am learning, I am absolutely learning, this is the fact. Or, in another usage, for example, "i´m not teaching, i´m learning.")

Ben yarın sınav olacağım. (I shall take an exam tomorrow.)

yarın : tomorrow | pronunciation: yaarın

sınav: exam

olmak : 1to be, 2to become, 3to happen, 4to ripen, 5to be acceptable, ..... 12to take (exam)

sınav olmak: to take an exam (pure translation: to be exam)

Underlining for the stresses:

Ben yarın sınav olacağım. (I shall take an exam tomorrow.)

=Alternative and better: Yarın ben sınav olacağım.

-->Not anyone else, ""I"" will take.

Ben yarın sınav olacağım. (I shall take an exam tomorrow.)

-->Not today, not two days later, not in next week.

Ben yarın sınav olacağım. (I shall take an exam tomorrow.)

=Alternative and better: Sınav olacağım ben yarın. (the predicate locates in beginning)

-->What I will do tomorrow is to take an exam.

Ben yarın sınav olacağım. (I shall take an exam tomorrow.)

=Alternatives, rarely types : Olacağım yarın ben sınav| Olacağım yarın sınav ben.

-->This is the fact, no one can deny, I will absolutely "take" the exam.

Çok yüzdüğüm için çok yoruldum. (I am too tired because I swam very much.)

çok : 1much, very much, 2too, [too hot] 3so, [so difficult] 4many [many cars]

yüzmek : to swim

yorulmak : to get tired, to be tired

Underlining for the stresses:

Çok yüzdüğüm için çok yoruldum. (I am too tired because I swam very much.)

Çok yüzdüğüm için çok yoruldum. (Because I swam very much, I am too tired.)

=Alternative: Çok yoruldum çok yüzdüğümüz için. | The stress is now at the component "çok yoruldum" because it is the predicate and also locates in the beginning of the sentence.

If you want to emphasise the predicate, you should accommodate it in the beginning of the sentence.

Bu yaz en az birkaç kilo vermek zorundayım. (I have got to lose minimum a few kilos in this summer.)

yaz : summer

en az : least, minimum

birkaç : a few, several

vermek : to give

kilo vermek : to lose weight (purely: to give kilo)

zorunda olmak : to have to, to have got to

Underlining for the stress:

Bu yaz en az birkaç kilo vermek zorundayım. (I have got to lose minimum a few kilos in this summer.)

=Alternative syntax: Vermek zorundayım bu yaz en az birkaç kilo|Vermek zorundayım en az birkaç kilo bu yaz. | the predicate was accommodated in the beginning.

---->It must be certainly done.

Bu yaz en az birkaç kilo vermek zorundayım. (I have got to lose minimum a few kilos in this summer.)

=Alternative syntax: En az birkaç kiloyu bu yaz vermek zorundayım.

---->There are certainly a few kilos that I will lose, and I must lose them in this summer, not in another summer.

Bu yaz en az birkaç kilo vermek zorundayım. (I have got to lose minimum a few kilos in this summer.)

---->perhaps a few kilos may not be enough, but i must lose that much (a few kilos) at least.

Bu yaz en az birkaç kilo vermek zorundayım. (I have got to lose minimum a few kilos in this summer.)

---->one kilo or two kilos are not enough, the quantity must reach a few kilos.

Bu yaz en az birkaç kilo vermek zorundayım. (I have got to lose minimum a few kilos in this summer.)

=Alternative and rare syntax: Vermek zorundayım bu yaz en az birkaç kilo|Vermek zorundayım en az birkaç kilo bu yaz.

Cuma, Cumartesi ve özellikle Pazar günleri genellikle boşum. (I am usually free on Friday, Saturday and especially Sunday.)

özellikle : especially

gün : day

genellikle, genelde : usually

boş : 1empty, 2free (not busy)

Underlining for the stress:

Cuma, Cumartesi ve özellikle Pazar günleri genellikle boşum. (I am usually free on Friday, Saturday and especially Sunday.)

=Genellikle Cuma, Cumartesi ve özellikle Pazar günleri boşum.

Genellikle Cuma, Cumartesi ve özellikle Pazar günleri boşum. (I am usually free on Friday, Saturday and especially Sunday.) | Bringing the days into front of the predicate so as to emphasise them easily.

=Cuma, Cumartesi ve özellikle Pazar günleri genellikle boşum. | This type requires more intonation effort.

Cuma, Cumartesi ve özellikle Pazar günleri genellikle boşum. (I am usually free on Friday, Saturday and especially Sunday.)

-->I am usually free, not always.

Romantik komedi filmlerini hiç sevmem. (I never like the romantic comedy movies.)

film : movie

hiç : never

sevmek : 1to love, 2to like

The negation adverb "hiç" usually attracts the stress to itself. In other words, our people usually state this adverb much stronger.

Therefore these would be the same:

=Hiç romantik komedi filmlerini sevmem.

=Romantik komedi filmlerini sevmem hiç.

If one emphasise another components, one can emphasise of course.

Romantik komedi filmlerini sevmem hiç. (I never like the romantic comedy movies.)

---->otherwise, perhaps i love other sorts.
