Lesson 2 - Do you know English?

Now have a look at the conversation text below and play while seeing the text. Merhaba, İngilizce biliyor musunuz ? Maalesef. Tamam. Teşekkürler.
Merhaba “Merhaba” is a greeting means Hello. Also Selam can be used (informal). Review previous lesson for more information. İngilizce biliyor musunuz ? Do you know English? İngilizce is English. Can be any other language like Arapça (Arabic). Biliyor means know. “bil” is the root, means know. The rest are suffixes. “yor” is for present continuous time. (in Turkish know can be in continuous) musunuz is a question suffix means do you if you attach it to a verb and means are you if you attached it to adjective or noun. doktor musunuz ? means “are you a doctor? “. biliyor musunuz ? means “do you know ?”. Arapça biliyor musunuz ? means “do you know Arabic ?”. Opera biliyor musunuz ? means “do you know Opera ?”.
Maalesef Means sadly or unfortunately . It is the “No” reply to yes/no questions. Typical answers could also be: Evet. means yes. Hayır. means no. Maalesef means Unfortunately. In our example you can also add the word I know or I don’t know. Check the following: Evet biliyorum Yes I know. Hayır bilmiyorum No I don’t know Maalesef bilmiyorum Unfortunately I don’t know
Tamam. Teşekkür ederim = Well. Thank You Tamam means well. “Teşekkür ederim”, “Teşekkürler” and “sağol” have the same meanings. But “sağol” is informal. You can also say “sağolun” for the formal meaning. If we arrange them from formal to informal: Teşekkür ederim [most formal] > Sağolun > Sağol [less formal] *Check previous lesson for audio and more explanation about this part. Now you can express
