Are you judging people by YOUR standards here?! I agree with you about its lack of meaning, but I think you will find its the greeting card companies who have "engineered" it.

Well I am hard pressed to think of anything more 'romantic' than rushing to the chemist to buy condoms!  Why are you not prepared for the 'special day' I was going to mention flavour - oh why not
