i had to fire an employee today for making inappropriate comments at work....about killing people, among other things. as i was escorting him out of the building, he threatened me.

Oh wow, that is so fucked up :-S. Is there a way you can protect yourself? I hope there is something useful you can do... You never really know what kind of weirdoes are around .

Most people like that are idiots, he might even be psychologically unstable, but still capable of being dangerous. Protect yourself ahead of time, don't take it lightly.
