So you mean I´m not the atheist evangelist?
And am I not the slightly flakey pastafarian who talks about global warming while driving a sports car?

This Poll conducted by Konda seems to be taken quite seriously in Turkey and one of the outcomes, when it was put into a graph, does not look very promising unfortunately.
That is more of a concern than the points which were mentioned in Chiko´s original post as we already knew them.. (I mean xenophobia, paranoia about being carved up, not reading books, position in women in general in the society, trust of the army etc)
The graph which was drawn by prof Tarhan Erdem, head of Konda, tells us something interesting at the same time it is worrying:

x axis (left to write 1 to 5) 1 is conservative life style, 5 is modern life style (might be what merih was mentioning in her column)
y axis (from bottom to top ) 1 is sheria 5 is secularism.
According to the survey, group ´a´ has the weight of 85-90% and group ´b´ has 10-15%
Basically, almost all people consider themselves as secular. But 85-90 % of them think that they are conservatives as far as the life style is concerned..
The other 10-15 % think that they have a modern life style..
group ´b´ who thinks that they are modern and has 10-15% weight, have a fear of secularism but the other group (a) who has the majority do not share the same fear..
Two conclusions I think:
The good one is, fear of sheria in Turkey is a hype.
Bad conclusion is, conservatism always oppresses the others..

First of all, you do realize the US is a multicultural country, don´t you? So when you say "people from my own culture" I find it curious. Obviously I am not culturally kin to the people you discuss, and choose to align yourself with.
This is exactly the condescending thing I was referring to....."DO I REALIZE THAT THE US IS MULTICULTURAL?" alameda...my own family is multicultural....and we don´t talk to eachother like this!
As for my posts being irritating, they irritate the same people over and over again. Those same people have attacked others who they don´t feel are "liberated" enough. They constantly make fun of Turkish/Islamic society. Others seem to be athiest evangelists, constantly picking arguments and undermine others beliefs.
They irritate the same people over and over because you target the same people over and over again. What is wrong with making "fun" ? People do it all the time about Bed Amerikans/Brits/Borats/Cloggies.......the difference is, we take it in stride and laugh about ourselves because we are mature enough to realize that our culture is not perfect. There is a certain segment of the population here that thinks there culture is above any reproach.
Femminist? How about the other side? I don´t swallow "their" idea of femminism, I prefer to be more concerned with humanity, not one gender in particular. I think some females idea of being femminist is unrealistic and also chauvenistic. If I express that, that is my right. It is not being insulting if I don´t agree.
Nobody really cares what your opinions are....it is your demeaning way of conveying your thoughts that we don´t like.
I also don´t think I have ever called you stupid, that is your interpretation of things, not anything I have said.
You dont´ have to call me or anyone stupid for your condescending tone to do it for you.
Anyway, this is tedious. You girls have fun cackling over my posts. Glad to see I´ve provided some entertainment for you.
You´re right, this is very tedious but I didn´t speak up to be mean or show my allegiance to any gang. I spoke up because it´s really difficult to watch how you manipulate people and insinuate negative attributes about people´s lifestyle and choices and then act surprised when you get attacked for it.

I agree this is tedious, and I will not be commenting any further on this subject. My own personal comments I stand by, but I have no wish to make anyone feel they are under mob-attack. Unfortunately, if it feels that way, it is because you insist on addressing your comments to this mythical "gang" - who actually have ideas as diverse as yours.
Anyway, for me, subject is closed.

1 alameda, honestly, I don´t understand how somebody as intelligent as you can be so completely uninsightful. Your posts are condesending and insulting to many members.
2 Perhaps many members are unsulting as well, but at least they acknowledge their shortcoming. You are content to insult people and then act surprised when you get the reaction that you deserve. Your posts are irritating to many of the more feminist women here. Just because we happen to agree with eachother about your posts, doesn´t mean we always agree with each other.
3 GG and I have vastly different political views, but NEVER once has she insinuated that I am stupid.
4 You have a habit of talking down to people and then claim how culturally sensitive you are when you can´t even be sensitive to people from your own culture!
#1 Well, what can I do if reading my posts made you feel stupid. Should I make things more simplistic?
#2 I think the issue is one of intent and specificity.
#3 It´s in the eyes of the beholder
#4 LBGT-American, Anglo-American, Christian-American, Jewish-American.....Muslim-American, Progressive-American. One thing is sure, you and I are not culturally kin. We share a country, but our values are very different. Again I ask, just what culture is that? African-American, Mexican-American, Pacific-American? I don´t think we have similar definition of multi-culturalism, and I highly doubt if in Texas you have the cultural diversity as there is in the SF Bay Area, or New York City. I´ve been to Texas, never want to go back there.

alameda, I think I finally get you. You do not identify yourself as a peer of any earthly human being let alone another American....(not such a bad thing for me). You don´t want to accept the fact that if you are living in the US, regardless of your ethnic background, you are part of the culture. I can seen now why you are so quick to dislike other Americans.
As for where I live....right now I live in Texas because that is where my career took me but I spent most of my life abroad and on the Northeast Coast of the US (NY and Boston). I also spent several months living the the Middle East with my father.....but none of this makes me an authority on culture or people. But what I find interesting about you is that you act like you are an authority on everything (including Texas). So, go ahead and continue to put everyone down to make yourself feel more important. If that is what you need to do to get thru the day, then more power to you.
