Quoting libralady: Quoting lady in red: I know 'going off topic' is a TC tradition but how the hell did Brad Pitt and Jude Law end up in a forum titled The Most Powerful Women in the World??

Not sure what message is being sent to us here, it is rather disconcerting that nearly all the most powerful women are from USA and now doubt, if the truth be known they have a either powerful man or a rich man behind them. It would be better to know how many of these "powerful women" are actually self made.

The part of the US having a disproportionate number of 'powerful' is unfortunate. However, your comment that behind each or many of these women is a 'powerful' or 'rich' man is very sexist and moves in line with old thinking. The same could be said of any woman in any country. I for one would hate that think that in the future my niece or any future daughters I might have would be judged this way. It is absolutely frightening! In today's world while difficult, a woman does not need a man to become powerful! And a woman's value is NOT dependent upon the man that stands next to her!

This is so wise Capoiera! Thank you so much!
To libralady - I absolutely don't agree with you. While there might be a few of those women who became powerful 'along' with their husbands, most of them didn't. Look at Angela Merkel or Condolezza Rice - have you ever heard about their husbands??? I don't even know if they are married at all! Also, you might notice that all of these women have a great education and lots of achievements in their lives, not just one (like being a wife of a rich man).
Yes, it is very sexist to assume such a thing - that any powerful woman has a powerful man behind her and doesn't really make sense either. This might have been the necessity in order for a woman to be successful 100 years ago, but not these days.

Unfortunately in some cases it IS true (for example Mrs Gates & Mrs Clinton ). It is still a huge struggle for women in business and unfortunately there is still a disproportionate amount of men in the "key" positions.
Sexual equality only exists on paper and the women who DO manage to endure the constant sexist remarks from their male colleagues and their inability to stomach the idea of a women giving orders, tend to be very strong,"hard nosed" and career obsessed. Without such "hard" qualities, I agree with Libralady that they only manage success with the help of a man (or at the very least, using his name to get a "foot in the door")
Until men can accept women as equals in the workplace, the situation will continue

yes... that's definitely true. I just wouldn't go as far as Libralady and say that EVERY woman who accomplished something had to do it with the help of a man.

Well along those lines one should add EVERY man as well. Because some other man had to open the door for them as well. The most powerful man in the world, unfortunately, George W. Bush surely one could not think he got to that position without his father.

Absolutely! Incidently, the abuse of women in top jobs is unbelievable. Men are sarcastic and sullen to their faces and in many cases will try to sabotage their successes.
Wherever I have worked I have noticed that all levels of male managers will meet together regularly in a male environment (such as a pub or club) where they release their frustrations by joking about their female colleagues in disgusting and sexual ways.
The poor insecure lambs....

a lot of studies have also been conducted in this area supporting this in various management and employment contexts and locations,
eg. Dreher and the 'glass ceiling' etc.
so in this case i agree...

This is an excellent point I was going to mention!

Yes, absolutely! I have studied engineering and it's unbelievable how insecure men are when it comes to working with women in traditionally male environments. It impinges on their already fragile masculinity .
