They are closer in last 5 years, but there are real issues to work out. Honestly though, the longer it goes, the less Turkey will need to be in EU.

It has nothing to do with Christianity.  They must first successfully complete negotiations with the European Commission on each of the 35 chapters of the EU's acquis. So far they have only met maybe 5 out of 35.
The earliest date that Turkey could enter the EU is 2013, the date when the next financial perspectives (the EU's six year budgetary perspectives) will come into force.

You didn`t answer my second question. In what ways are Romania and Bulgaria superior to Turkey?
