I think I'm breaking the politics rule, but since Iraq has come up as an issue in so many forums, as well as some "misperceptions" about Americans- it is important to note that the American people are speaking out.
In a midterm election (not a presidential election)- the Democrats have turned out in larger numbers than over a decade. Interestingly their number one reason for voting in these local congressional elections- discontent with our current administration's policies in Iraq.
I'm watching the numbers live as I write.
There is hope...

Christine, you rebel.....but I'm gonna join in the rebellion!!!
Word has just come in here in California and the Democrats have won control of the House of Representatives. This means we will have our first female Speaker of the House!!!!

I stayed up as late as I could to watch! Thank God is all I could say this morning when I looked at the news.
The Democrats overwhelmingly won the control of the House of Representatives, and yes- a woman will be the Speaker for the first time in US history!!!!!
We are waiting for two races- to see if the Democrats ALSO win control of the Senate.
Interestingly- there may be a need for a "recount" , and there are hints of fraud.... How does this always happen, especially when the Democrats are ahead?

Me too Anenigma! Hilary Clinton or Barak Obama for 2008. Heck, there was a rumor Oprah Winfrey was going to run. At this point, we'll take almost anyone- things really can't get worse- can they?
Hilary won her NY seat with over 60% of the vote. Yeah!
I have to say I can't stand electronic voting. You don't even get a printout of your vote. Who controls the "transfer" of the data? I don't want to fall into my conspiracy theory thinking- but having a central computer "count" opens huge doors for problems- there is no way to actually "verify" outside of the computer controller.
I'll be sneaking peeks at the last 2 senate races all day today at work

Joey _I am not really interested in internal American politics but I seem to recall things were indeed much worse when the democrats were in power in the sixties and their disastrous policy in Vietnam.

Like you say, I don't care who it is as long as the US get a president who starts representing what the majority of the US people think and want.
Hmmm the electronic voting system DOES sound very very worrying....
Even MORE worrying...where is Teaschip!!!? I really can't be bothered to come here if she won't argue with me!

Haha! Well if you want to discuss party politics, then I would say Richard Nixon and Hoover were hardly a glowing example of Republican presidents!
And what about JFK? Surely a great example of a wonderful Democratic President?

Maybe you don't worry 'cause you're siting in some bar across the ocean. But, when you watch military spending going up and financial support to universitiy and public education going down or the increase in building prisons and not schools then you worry!

I think you misunderstand Capoeira - we certainly do worry, but we dont have the vote! We can only sit and watch who will be the next person to drag us into a war we dont agree with, for fabricated reasons! We have the opposite problem by the way - zero capacity in prisons and not enough money given to the military....

I understood him perfectly well. He was making a point that it did not matter which political party was governing. Meaning, both parties have had their monsters. But, I am saying...true...but I'll choose the lesser of the two evils!

As many of us have been guilty of “Bush Bashing†lately on this site, I wanted to congratulate the USA on their historic action today. You have restored my faith in democracy
American people, even in such staunch republican states such as Pennsylvania, have taken action today – the majority doing so because they disagree with the Iraq "War". US press are already saying that Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is due to resign.
I hope any anti-American members of this site remember Bush does not necessarily represent the views of the US people. My only negative comment about today is…. I wish they had been so committed during the Presidential election of 2004 and pushed the percentage to over 49% against him THEN.

Short and sweet - whoever is in power has a bloody hell of lot of sorting out to do and I will join you over a wiskey too!! In my life and the part of it that can remember or rather was remotely interested in American Presidents, I just remember there has always been plenty of scandal

See here is the thing, it has nothing to do about Bush for me personally. I don't believe in abortion or gay marriages etcc. Democrates won't do anything about terrorism so, it's more than just Bush. The list goes on, but the more personal crap I post here the more I get attacked. So, with that being said I will keep the rest to myself. Just for now. hehehehe

Its all a mess. Anyone who thinks Bush has made America safer in the last few years needs to get out more...
Anyone who thinks that these election results will get us out of this mess is equally dillusional.
Rumsfeld is out...this is good. But now what?
No overwhelming majority on either side of the house. So whats going to get done? Nothing...

I agree with u teaschip..but i don't think views on abortion or gay marriages etc should be included in politics..just because i don't like it doesn't mean the government should encroach on other people's rights to do what they want...just my opinion/

YOU PESSIMIST!!!
But at least you waited 24hrs. before you decided to rain on my parade!
Hey, what ever happened to hope? Imagine where our country would be if somebody hadn't had a vision or a dream of something better and the will to pursue it. Just think back to the Brown v Board of Education, Roe v Wade, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the 13th Constitutional Amendment. All these are evidence that change is possible.
Ok...I'll get off my podium now!
