Oh I'm so confused! First my husband says it's the first of Janurary, then someone here on tc tells me it's the 31st.... and now the 30th!?

Is it possible that it starts on different dates according to where in the world you are? I know that once when I was in Turkey for the party days after ramazan it started one day after it started in Denmark.

so is today just like a national holiday (like bank holiday monday) or more of a religious holiday (like St Andrews Day) kinda thing?

This is how the date is set:
"It is celebrated on the 10th day of the month of Dhul Hijja (ذو الحجة of the lunar Islamic calendar, after Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. This happens to be approximately 70 days after the end of the month of Ramadan."
Turkey bases itself on the scientific calender to determine the position of the moon, which means that the date is fixed a long time already.
Other people (eg. the Moroccan society overhere) don't base themself on the scientific calender but on the moment on which the new moon above Mecca is visible with the naked eye.
Hence the different dates.
