Well there's a question so there's an answer. Without any malice, I myself had the courage to frankly ask my turkish friend about it, then he answered me very straight forward, yes for personal hygiene and a muslim tradition.

i know on my part, i was just talking in general terms about things.

it is up to the reader if they want to read more into the things that is said.

if you do read into more than what is said, then maybe it's your mind that has gone elsewhere...?

From http://www.experts-exchange.com/Miscellaneous/Philosophy_Religion/Q_22028823.html

"Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of God, upon whom be God’s blessings and peace, said, “Five things are part of one’s fitra: Shaving the pubic hair, circumcision, trimming the moustache, removing any underarm hair, and trimming the nails.” (Muslim, “Tahara,” 49)"

And you can find here more information about this, look "shaving" or "shave":

Well, my ex-boyfriend told me that there is three times a week a check for this. The officer in command just says: pants down...

I also heard that soldiers in the past were "tickets" to prostitutes, if they wanted them. Now, they're apparently given something to keep all natural urges down somehow... but they still screen pornos for those who want to see it.

Hairy shoulders and backs? Yikes! That's indeed a big no-no!

I hate this current obsession for men to have hairless chests, legs, backs etc! I would rather a man have hair on his chest than know that he shaves it every day - it seems to be vain and a bit narcissistic. Men are men - if you prefer a hairless body - become a lesbian lol!

A man can have hair, why not? And shaving? No, apart from facial hair is that not necessary to me. But don't you agree that there's a difference between having (some) hair on legs and chest and having a complete fur?

Well I suppose "complete" fur is not very attractive lol ! And actually I like the custom of shaving armpits and "other places" but hair on legs, chest etc. should be left alone - its lovely

I get your point. However, for a lot of men, having too much or not enough hair is as important an issue as women having too small boobs..

I wonder what the men in other places do; never shave? or just do waxing?

Where I live (Chile , South America ) most men shave their FACE ONLY because if they shave another areas such as the armpits it is considered not manly (generally speaking)
Personally I am not against Body Hair but if muslims do for hygienic reasons , that's understandable.
It surprised me a bit I have to say! I mean to shave the pubic area ...well you learn something new everyday!

For me a shaved chest is a complete no no! Men who shave their chests, arm pits etc etc well I dare not say what I think lol .

There was this bloke on holiday last year who had shaved his chest and low and behold he had gone all pimply - how nice.

As for shaved other bits, I reserve judgement

Ok, MrQ! Sounds very James Bond. I believe it very much depends on where you come from in Europe as to how we ladies "deal" with uhmmm, that sensitive area. Actually, OMer and I were together in Istanbul for the past ten days, and I was shocked to see that he shaved his armpits. I don't think any American men do that. When I asked him about it- he said he worked so hard (he waiters and bartends at a fancy nightclub) that he sweat so much, shaving decreased the bad smell of perspiration. He also said he perspired less with shaven armpits.

So it does seem functional.
