ötesine gitmek and geçmek are almost same meaning.
You can say, if you went somewhere(shop,home,a place etc) when you past the street, ötesine gittik. You don't need to clarify saying the name of a place, but it is expected that you went somewhere.
And geçmek is just to pass.
Go past. Not sure what does it mean in English clearly.
So choose the best explanation for you.
And I would be glad if you post the correct answer here. So I can learn it too.

You helped me a lot, although i still don't understand why in both cases you have to use this particular -ten- or -i- suffix. :-S
I'll try to figure it out!

Good question indeed.
Geniş bir sokak geçtik. -- we went past a wide street.
Geniş bir sokaktan geçtik. -- we past through a wide street. ???
Geniş bir sokağı geçtik. -- we past through a wide street. ???
Not sure though.
geçmek can be used with any of them.
if there is 'bir' it means an unknown, without THE in English.
It would be better to make it another thread in this section and wait for teachers to reply.

I don't have any idea why the first example doesnt have an ending, and what the exact English translation would be...
But I think the 2nd could mean "we went down a wide street" (as in you walk all the way along the street, from the beginning to the end),
and the 3rd "we crossed a wide street"? (going from one side of the street to the opposite side)
ps: waiting for the pro's too here

I don't think there is an appreciable difference between the 2nd and 3rd sentence...
Depending on the context, either of them could mean 'we passed through a wide street', 'we went down a wide street' or 'we crossed a wide street'

This is a simple sentence.
2.Geniş bir sokaktan geçtik. -- we passed a wide street.
This sentence can have some extra info after sokaktan.
Geniş bir sokaktan koşarak,yürüyerek etc geçtik.
3.Geniş bir sokağı geçtik. -- we passed a wide street.
This sentence can have some extra info after sokağı.
Geniş bir sokağı koşarak,yürüyerek geçtik.
*You cannot add koşarak, yürüyerek, yavaşÃ§a, hızlıca etc
after sokak in the first sentence.
**2 & 3 have the same meaning and functionality.

I knew that what you said was right, I was just wondering why my coursebook gave the wrong answers. Thanks, now I'll be more doubtful as to what they suggest as anwers.
