Quoting AlphaF:

'Merhaba' is also an expresssion of Turkish......

Are you saying it has some far more fundemental meaning than being a greeting?

Don't worry, it's just a greeting now, like "hello".
He's talking about the origin of the word which I hadn't known before...

There is a difference of opinion here...

My source tells me "Merhaba" is a greeting word of Persian origin, roughly meaning " no harm can come from me to you...."

A friend on the panel thinks it is a greeting word originating from Arabic, meaning "joy to everyone...."

Both are nice...could not verify either

That's very interesting. I particularly like the Persian version.

Me too I love the Persian meaning !! Makes me feel all warm and safe!!

Yes....Consider a lonely desert traveller who arrives at a totally unfamiliar set of Beduin tents at dusk...He must have something deeper to say more than just "hello guys!". No?
