Yes, you're right, he meant that. I wasn't aware that there was a difference in meaning between them in English.

I know where Im from in the usa when someone says:
"I envy you"....
the interpretation is usually that I am jealous of/ or I wish I were you or I wish I had something you have.


to be jealous
to covet
to envy ... they should all mean the same thing, but i guess we use them differently.

envy means "gıpta etmek", "imrenmek" in Turkish.
For example "çok sağlam bir kişiliği var, ona gıpta ediyorum->he has got a strong personality, i envy him"

So in this case the sentence "I envy you" can mean that "I wish I were as beautiful as you are."

yeah ha! If someone said to you...I envy your beauty. One here would interpret that to mean, I wish I were as beautiful as you" as a matter of fact it is used quite frequently by one saying "Im jealous of you" also.

If one were to say "I covet your beauty" one might interpret that to mean "Your beauty is mine"
But when one here says "I envy you" we interpret it as Im jealous of you and/or what you have NOT what others might be coveting, envying or having jealousy of.

I hope that makes sense.

by the way...hehe I wouldnt take his jealousy as a silliness. I would interpret jealousy from anyone a very serious emotion indeed.
