It's used for the expected events/actions that takes longer than expected/predicted.

Bebek doğmak bilmedi.
Misafirler gitmek bilmedi.
Sabah olmak bilmedi.
Gece bitmek bilmedi.
Yemek pişmek bilmedi.
Ateş sönmek bilmedi.

Close. I already explained its meaning in detail.

As you may already know we use "bilmek" for ability.

gelebildi - he could come
gelebilmedi - he couldn't come (in Azeri Turkish)

I mean, using "bilmek" gives close meanings to ability.

so gelmek bilmedi more or less means
(we expect him to come but) he couldn't come (yet).
