If you don't want to get ripped off, you have to use YTL. In most places though you can only use YTL.

When you pay with dollars or euros, prices will almost always be rounded off upwards.

Exactly! You also have no idea what exchange rate they are using!

I also used sterling, and I asked for the calculator and worked out my exchange rate at the best one I had seen in the town! Which incidentally was better than the one I had got in the UK.

Aha! Canny lady

However, I do like to use local currency wherever I travel. It seems a bit arrogant to expect everyone to accept sterling, dollars or euros.

European visitors to the UK are the same. They find it strange that its hard to use Euros, but ITS NOT OUR CURRENCY!

I always take enough ytl to see me though the first day and then i exchange sterling there because you nomally get a better rate. Also where i go the shopkeepers like you to pay in pound sterling because they themselves get a better rate at the bank.

I used sterling to pay for my paragliding because they asked for it, not because I wanted to!!!!! Like that, they can exchange it whenever the rate is good. I use YTL the rest of the time - but I can guarantee that they LOVE sterling in the resorts!!!!!!

I think it is more a case of materialism! or lets see if we can escape from paying so much tax, by getting as much sterling cash as we can...........

When you offer to pay in YTL and they say, have you got sterling? Who am I to reason why? I just wanted to goparagliding

I remember the first time we went to Turkey in 1988 £1 sterling was worth just over 2000 old lira the next year 4000 and so on until it reached 3 million a few years ago. Since then it has been fairly stable.

I agree, I always use the currency of the country - but on this occasion I was ASKED for sterling! Not my fault or a lack of respect on my part!!!!

So, YTL is the best right?
But what about prices? Is Turkey cheap place? I live in North-Europe and life is quite expensive here.

4 years ago 1$ = 1.73 YTL (or 1,730,000 TL) I remember well because I bought my previous notebook with that rate.

Compared to our prices in Europe, UK, France, Germany, Holland etc etc Turkey is cheaper but I would not say cheap. We noticed that eating out is cheaper but some of the gifts etc are not that much different.

No, they have the same prices. They're expensive.

Yet, you can find perfect copies of these marks, just you have to know where to find them or search yourself a bit

Turkish copies are fantastic and much better quality than anywhere else. Unfortunately I don't like to dress like a 'chav', but if you are into "designer" sports clothes and tshirts, they are great value!
