I believe there is a misconception concerning the number of wives Islamic men are allowed. From research, polygamy existed before the time of the prophet in Arabic nations. Mainly due to a great number of men who died in wars. Because of the death toll, the female/male ratio was severely distorted. "What the Quran did was to limit the right to marry up to four women, but only if the man could treat them all equally, and then stated explicitly that such treatment was not possible."

OLD TURKISH ADVISE FOR GENTLEMEN
The idea of having 4 wives may seem very tempting at first glance, but not if you take time to also consider the 4 mothers-in-law that will come along.

OLD TURKISH SECRET for LADIES
One good way to decrease the chances of him getting yet another wife after you, is to be his fourth wife.

How many men would really want 4 wives!! I am sure for most of them, one is sufficient! Just think, all those headaches
But more seriously, I know that it is possible to have more than one wife under Islam (but not in Turkey). More likely in countries like Afganistan, Saudi Arabia etc etc. And the wives must be treated fairly, i.e time and money spent on them. In some Islamic countries it is now illegal, Syria and Lebenon and maybe others too.
I read a true story, "Book Seller of Kabul", when the first wife became to old to bear children, the husband then chose another wife, but the first wife also had a say in his choice. And if I remember correctly, she could not bear children so he chose a third.
