In a study financed by the Turkish government and the EU at the University of Ankara, over 8,000 women were interviewed about domestic violence. Thirty-nine percent of the women believe that their husbands may have legitimate reasons for becoming violent. The reasons they named included: refusal to have sex, neglecting the children, thriftless behavior, contradicting their husbands, burning the dinner.

Burning the dinner? Oh my gosh.... That's almost 40% of women who allow their husbands to abuse them.

Offffffffff

I cannot guarantee I would NOT get violent if my husband burned the dinner or refused to have sex either ....

OMG! Oppression (patriarchy) at its best is when you manage to convince the subordinated group that they should be oppressed! It's a result of brainwashing by family, relatives, the whole society. It's a normal response - for example children who come from abusive families believe that they deserved to be punished.

This is NOT consent! Consent is a conscious decision when the person is aware of all his/her options and is free to take either one.

...it reminds me of African-American slaves in North America who, after slavery was abolished, continued to "serve" their owners because they felt it their duty

They had never known a different life, so felt that their treatment was "normal" and acceptable...

I never understood why a woman would allow this to happen.

+1

Rights are either given or taken, but if the oppresseds are not aware that it's their right to have their rights, then we may wait hundreds of years that some evolution takes place, and for the opressors who are worse than the opressed, we have to wait for a thousands of years that some evolution takes place by their part.
Or... By some laws made by conscious civilized people (man/woman) will give (and even force) these rights to them.
So, that's why it's not always a good thing for a society to decide for themselves. I'm sure if we left it to people to decide for a law not to comdemn a husband for beating her wife we would be able to make such a law in these circumstances.

Yes, very well put! That's why democracy brings also bad things (like porn or relaxed gun laws) on top of the great things like personal freedoms.

Well if my husband burnt the cooking, 1) I wouldn't be suprised lol and 2) All I could do is laugh and as for the sex part....when he wants you just leave him to squirm by himself or make him beg haha!

Children are so cruel sometimes. Whoever said "school days are the happiest of your life" obviously had a very short memory!

Meltem, just please don't generalize this to ALL feminists . Let's just try to identify the individual mistakes.
You are of course part of the group, we're just experiencing temporary technical problems .
