rick i am here solely to learn turkish and although at times i make mistakes and feel i am losing the battle i will continue to muddle through and maybe just maybe i will be able to speak turkish fluently. I am learning turkish because i holiday there every year and the people are so open and friendly with me i feel it is only right that i can show an understanding of the language, we plan to buy a sailing boat when we retire and live aboard for the summer months therefore i believe that learning the language will only enhance my wonderful time spent is this truely magnificent country so there you have it my reason to be here!

No Rick. It's not cause of a boyfriend. Not for me anyway.
A turkish friend introduced this website to me, as he knew i was already trying to learn turkish. And though my reason to start turkish lessons 1.5 year ago was a b/f, when i first visited this site my 'reason' was not existing anymore.
But, like Deli said, i have been to Turkey many times and planning to vist there even more in the future. And once you have visited this country its not possible to forget it.
Whatsmore, i have a passion with learning everything i can, about different cultures and foreign countries. It's like a hobby for me.
But let me tell you one more thing. Probably the main reason why i m here: Here, in this forum, i ve made many and very precious friends. TC is a kind of a family to me. So, even if i decide to quit turkish, or learn spanish later (which is under serious consideration btw), i will still be visiting TC. Got it?

It seems that there are some people who use this site purely so they can get messages to and from their bf/gf translated. Personally I cannot understand why they don't actually try and learn the language. But they are by far the minority!!!
For me, I visit Turkey last year with my girlfriend and we fell in love with the country and it's people so much that we immediately booked to go back again. We both decided to try and learn a little Turkish for when we return. I have always been useless at languages but I seem to have fallen for the Turkish language as much as I have for the place itself.
So I suppose my reason to learn is learning for its own sake - I can communicate with my girlfried in English (we are both English natives!). Whilst the initial reason to learn was because of visiting again, learning has now become an end in itself.

I'm here to improve my Turkish and help others with their Turkish 'cause I speak Turkish due to my job but there is no end to perfection you know And I like this site very much and I find it really useful. So having a Turkish bf and gf is not the only reason to be here...

rick.. i agree with u by saying that there are lots of members who just want to get translations for the bf or gf who they have met on holiday! and that angers me sometimes as they dont generally want to learn TR.
there are however, several members who genuinely want to learn this beautiful language, such as myself and the other members who have also posted so far

It doesn't anger me at all.
I fail to uderstand it; perhaps because of my inate desire to learn about everything I possibly can......
Besides, it provides a endless source of real Turkish for us that are learing to translate. All practice must be a good thing

I think that if someone wants to use this site to communicate with their boyfriend or girlfriend is fine, as is someone who just wants to check out pictures of Turkey. It's from taking an interest in something in the first place that gives someone a desire to want to learn the language. Someone making comments that just belittle people who are not learning Turkish but still using this site is rude, besides I don't think it's any concern of yours as to why they are using the site.

I agree Kirsty. Why anyone uses the site is none of our concern provided their use does not get in the way of the raisons d'être of the site - to help people learn the Turkish language.

Well just to add my 5 cents worth (as a ruthless moderator )
Of course not all the members of this site are here to learn turkish! Are we forgetting the hundreds of TURKISH people who use the site? I think the point is that everyone on the site uses is for their own reasons and the thread that binds us all is an interest in somthing Turkish. Whether it is the language, culture, bf/gf whatever! I admit it is a bit irksome when people only use it to translate hundreds of texts and emails. I mean what are they going to do, ask someone to translate for as long as their relationship lasts? BUT or AMA if you prefer! The Turks who help out with the translations are improving their english and if its a Turkish learner helping, then they are also benefitting from the practice.
This I think is the point of the site. EVERYONE benefits in some way. Learning a language is only part of the experience. From chatting or PM to everyone on this site, I have learned a HUGE amount about culture, custom, religion and socio-psychology. If you want to learn a language for whatever reason it is a good thing to learn about the people who live in the country and speak the language.
Where would we all be without Miss C's invaluable 'slang' lessons for example?
In any event, the bf/gf translations etc are also valuable learning experiences for everyone.
My view is that learning is learning and every topic, discussion and issue is a learning experience for someone. It is no coincidence that this is probably one of the best learning sites on the whole web. It is because of the real sense of community, the willingness of all the active members to help anyone who asks and the genuine generous friendships we have all made here.
Well there you are, that's what I think! Longwinded as ever. If only I could achieve the ironic succinctness of AlphaF or the snappy one liners from Ramayan and Miss C.... (sigh)

Very nice messages in here. Keep talking as much as you like on this subject. I have moved it to off-topic anyway so you dont have to care too much attention on avoiding spelling mistakes and personal correspondence. So feel free and enjoy.
The thing that causes problem is the chat style messaging in language, Turkey or other important forums. And of course these annoying misspellings cause problem in other forums.
You can only use this forum section to talk to your friends which already is enough to serve this purpose. So I agree that its not our concern to limit member's communications but please do it in the correct place.
