Asian women eat a diet very high in FRESH vegetables and fruit. They eat mostly lean proteins and the carbohydrates that they consume are complex (like rice) which means they burn more slowly, sustain you longer and convert to glucose more slowly than other carbohydrates. My suggestion...keep it simple..eat fresh fruits and vegetables in abundance, stop drinking anything with sugar, and limit foods like white breads, white pastas. There is no "secret" but loosing weight is a little easier if you avoid processed foods.

Steaming is a more simple way to cook. All you need for that is a pot to put the liquid in, and something with holes in it on top of the waterit that will hold your food.
Some people use things like broth for the steaming liquid. You can get very complicated, or simple. Just put food steamer in google and see what comes up.
You can steam at least 5 things at once, and clean up is simple.

Quoting teaschip1: Why do asian women stay so skinny? Anyone out there who can give me some advice on dieting? What works what doesn't. I am committed to giving up fastfood, which means I have to cook now. I have no idea what to buy, what's healthy and tastes good at the same time. Help me! Where do I start? |
Simple equation! Eat less and exercise more!
It is a little bit worrying that you don't know what to buy - is that because you are limited in choice? Like no fresh veg or fruit, no butcher shops etc etc? From what I have witnessed in the USA, these shops were hard to come by, fast food after fast food and the portions are HUGE!! so I feel for you Tea! Maybe drink more tea??

I have never had to worry about my weight, then bam! I agree I definitaly need to exercise more. The vege thing is so confusing to me. Here is an example of veges & fruit I eat;
Veges
Broccoli-boiled with butter & cheese
Salad-in a bag with lots of dressing
greenbeans - lots of salt
corn-salt and butter
potatoes - mashed with butter
Strawberries - usually in a milk shake or with sugar or a pie or cake version
Grapes- I do eat these plain
I do know how to cook, just not healthy. We have lots of veges and fruits in the market, but I'm embarrased to say I don't know what half of them are. There are so many diets out there, it is so confusing.. I don't eat alot of sugar and I don't drink soda so that's two good things. I just need some good recipes with veges and a rice cooker.

here's an easy start for anyone.
1. No fast food. none whatsoever.
2. Two salads a day (tomato's, cucumbers, parsley, green peppers) with lemon juice and a little olive oil as dressing.
3. Add to that a 45 minute walk after work every night and you will immediately see the benefits (5 lbs in a week maybe?)
Obesity in America is a big problem but I will say that there are obstacles for Americans that many other countries don't have. For one, in most areas, you have to drive to do everything. School, work, shopping, you name it. So right there, the best form of exercise for the whole world doesn't happen naturally in America because its just too bigand spread out. Only a small percentage of areas have shops you can actually walk to. Another side factor of this is since you have to drive to shop, you tend to stock up and buy more, and also buy items that will last for a week. You cannot buy fresh vegetables for a whole week and expect them to stay fresh.
All of you who are looking to lose a few, I wish you the best and hope you stay with it!!!

That makes sense. I have to admit the salad you mentioned sounds good and better yet I recognize all of the ingredients. Now, I just need to find my running shoes.

Just notice the part where Keith mentions the dressing, consisting of some olive oil and lemon juice. This is crucial. Many people make the mistake to think that eating salad is healthy in anyway, and use mayonaise-based dressings on their salad. By doing this, you might as well just eat something else, because the dressing won't make you loose weight eating salad.
A dressing of olive oil and lemon juice is a really nice one, that doesnt leave you with such a stuffed and full feeling as other dressings do. And ofcourse it is very healthy.
You might want to consider to also buy apple-vinegar. It is said to help loose weight and you can easily mix up a spoon of this and olive oil on your salad.

I am guilty of putting way too much dressing on. Maybe to hide the taste of the salad. Apple-vinegar, I will have to try this to.

you might even like to try a little sprinkling of balsamic vinegar as a dressing for the salad. not too much as it's pretty powerful taste.

another good one is pomegranite vinegar. Myself I wouldn't put olive oil, lemon juice and vinegar in there if you use lemon juice, forgo the vinegar - you can also add a little crumbled feta cheese to the mix and some black olives!! and you have shepherd salad ready to go. I normally make a batch of it up and I find that lemon juice and olive oil help keep the veggies fresher longer.

I'd say feta cheese is a no-no though, when you are really on a diet. I make my salad the same way you do too (and with red onions), but if I were dieting the first thing that would go out of the salad would be the cheese.
ANyway maybe good to start with it, so that you will enjoy your salads more and will be able to keep your diet up.

Yes!
Lettuce, tomatoes, green peppers, tuna fish and white cheese, dressed with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
I like the taste. I used to have it as my dinner 5 days a week during the this summer. I lost 4 kg in about 3 months.
Unfortuntely I went to UK in September and in 2 weeks only, I regained that 4 kilos.

I remember the Chinese restaurants we used to go for lunch when I was in USA. Eat all you can and pay $7.5 only, damn cheap, every kind of salads, sea food, fruits, sweets. If we have such restaurants here, people would get fat easily, no doubt about it.

Ditch the butter, cheese, dressing, salt and milk shake and pie and that should make all the difference!
I steam my veg, brocolli, cauliflower, carrots etc etc, boil rice and pasta - with no butter or oil, and I hate mashed potatoes.
Jut dont add unnecssary fat to any cooking, and too much salt is of course bad, high blood pressure and water retention.
Try and avoid cornstarch, it is what the USA puts in diet drinks and it is addicitve according to research and makes you want to eat more.
Good luck! |

I always wondered why people that would have a non-diet drink were thinner than people that drank diet sodas. (I know this is not true for everyone, but I did notice it in a lot of people.)
This must be why I am having trouble. I drink a lot of diet sodas. I guess I better start drinking more water. I do now all the rules of dieting, it is the following of them I am having trouble with!!!

WATER, WATER, WATER....When I banished ALL soft drinks both diet and regular from my diet, I lost a lot of weight. It seems hard at first but I really don't miss it anymore.
I will admit I went a little extreme - I started eating only whole foods that were not packaged and eat only vegetables grown in my garden. I only eat meat with no hormones or antibiotics. I did this because I started to suspect that all the "toxins" I put in my body caused me to be overweight because my caloric intake was normal.
Like I said, I went a little extreme - I get eggs from a friend who has a chicken farm. I get cheese from a woman who makes it fresh....ect but it has made a HUGE difference. I have lost a ton of weight. Maybe if you make several small changes, it will make a big difference.
Good Luck

I followed which is really popular in Holland at the moment.. and lost quite a lot of weight actually.
It basically says the following:
-Drink at least 2 liters of water a day (very very important!)
-Eat at regular intervals (so breakfast, 1 snack in between, lunch, 1 snack in between, dinner and another little snack).
- don't eat after 8 o'clock, because your fat burns less fast then or something..
Also: variation in your food! don't always have breakfast with bread and lunch with bread. Take something different for breakfast (like an apple, or crackers, or fruitjuice), and again something else for lunch.
I hope this will work out for you too teaschip! Right now I got used to eating less (I usually had more than 1 snack betweent he main meals). And I even can eat some chocolate now and then!
Good luck!
