I am planning to travel to Istanbul in november but my parents and family are concerned about the latest problems with the PKK.Is it safe for me to travel now or should i wait till things calm down?I am not going to travel alone but with groups of tourists and we're travelling by bus.

Sorry but when was it not safe? What gave them the idea it was not safe?

If you mean crossing the road, then no it is not safe lol or getting past the carpet sellers lol It is no less safe than other big city, and I would not think twice about going again - but I would think twice before travelling to London.

Are you serious?!? Its more dangerous in London than Istanbul!

Well, in fact, Istanbul IS less safe now that those human-eating Turks have finished ramadan. They will eat you at all times of the day or night now.

Its probably best to walk around in groups of no less than 50 and be sure you carry a machine gun...

lol ok ok I get the point but I have a friend in istanbul, mert and he said that it IS better to wait a little because he says they are afraid now being in crowded places in case someone from kurdish people does something bad.I am totally in love with Turkey (apart from being in love with my ex-boyfriend who is turk) so i don't care much.I just wanna go....

There HAVE been a few bomb attacks by the PKK, but most were in tourist resorts. However, if the bombers want maximum impact they would do it during the busiest tourist months I guess.

There have been less terrorist attacks in Turkey than in the UK

Oh stop winding people up!

I agree with Libralady, Istanbul is as safe or unsafe as any other major city in the world depending on how you look at it. I would try to be reasonable and not get carried away with thinking a terrorist attack is going to happen every second people the chances are very slim. You have much more chance of being pick pocketed than being a victim of a PKK attack in my view.

hmmm...isn't istanbul a TOURIST resort?lol ok honestly if I die I'd prefer to die in turkey (why am I sooo obsessed?)I have been in istanbul in August for four days to meet my boyfriend and i fell in love with the city.Last week I think some russian tourists got bombed actually....and that's why my parents have totally forbidden me to go there...but i still wanna go...

I went to Istanbul a couple of weeks after a Dutch tourist was killed by a bomb in one of the small restaurants on the Galata Bridge and we walked along the place where it happened. If you always worry about what might happen you will never do anything - there will never be a good time!

Istanbul is a city - NOT a tourist resort!!!! It attracts tourists like anyother big city, but its hardly a resort. OK, to be specific, I should have said "tourist resorts in the south of Turkey!

I am obviously not advocating just walking off without telling anyone if that is necessary in this situation but i don't know if it is so i am not going to start telling people what to do.

I live here, and feel absolutely safe.

I suggest you check out your countrys embassys travel advice site. the UK one doesnt say avoid Istanbul at the moment. that should make your parents feel happier.

At the moment the PKK are targeting the army. I wouldnt worry as a tourist, but feel sad for all the people on this site who have a loved one doing national service at the moment. I Hope and pray they all stay SAFE.

I have never had any problems in Istanbul. However, I was in a restaurant having dinner with my husband, he left me alone for a few minutes to use the mens room when a male tourist from another European country sat at my table and started flirting with me. Reading my visibly uncomfortable facial expressions or perhaps because they knew I was with my Turkish husband, the waiter and another man came to my table and told the man I was not interested and to leave me alone. So quite to the contrary, I find that if you even look like you are in trouble, Turkish people will actually intervene and come to your rescue. I feel quite safe there.
If you are worried about terrorists, then I don't know of any place on the planet where you don't have to worry about that.

Oh Femme, everyone knows the truth about Dudu and his horrible ancestors by now. Please, this denial of Dudu behavior past and present is only a ploy to hide the fact that they want to seduce innocent western girls, get them into a taxi, steal their money, get them pregnant, force them to have an abortion, get a visa, and destroy their lives. lol (Did I forget anything?)

you should stop this anti-dudu propaganda

Oh Femme, everyone knows the truth about Dudu and his horrible ancestors by now. Please, this denial of Dudu behavior past and present is only a ploy to hide the fact that they want to seduce innocent western girls, get them into a taxi, steal their money, get them pregnant, force them to have an abortion, get a visa, and destroy their lives. lol (Did I forget anything?)

I agree wholeheartedly!!! 130mph and I thought I was going to have a heart attack before my 21st!
To be honest, I see no real reason why Istanbul should be unsafe at the moment. It's fine in my opinion for women on their own, and as for terrorism etc, London is more unsafe!

I am an expert in the taxi drivers =)better choose middle-aged or young ones they won't cheat u =) and bear in mind that the ones that are talkative are the ones most likely to try and get advantage of u =) but generally u'll LOVE the ride ehehehe esp.in Sultanahmet....hihihihih...watch how the grannies jump on the side of the road!!!!!

By the by,sign language also works for people who wanna cross a road!If it's red and u wanna cross it just stick out your finger to the drivers (uhm, the second one no the middle one)and they'll stop and let you pass(but if u hear the long horn then the finger won't help u)!!!!

According to my brother there are three things totally useless for the istanbul drivers:the breaks, the lights that show they will take a turn (dunno the english word for them)and the air condition =)(with such speed u just need to open ur window a little)haha

Don't be timid crossing the street! Go quickly, that is the most dangerous part...oh yes and don't look when your friend drives you anywhere. I felt very safe both times I was in Istanbul. I did not feel safe in Chicago, parts there were really scary. Terrorism is called that for a reason because it can happen anywhere anytime. If you really want your family to worry tell them about the risk of earthquake in Istanbul.

Delidolu,

Why dont you write a letter to PKK (if you have no adress for PKK, send your letter to any Turkish daily paper, they will print it for you). Tell them about your travel plans, aproximate dates you will be in Istanbul, your family's consern about your safety and ask them to pls lay off bombings while you are in Istanbul.

They are dandy terrorists. I am sure they will not break your heart.

Good luck !

I am travelling to Istanbul at the end of November and for the first time will be alone !
I am looking on it as a challenge, and to be honest, the safety aspect from terrorism never entered my head.
The only danger I can see is from the Taxis drivers !!! Decided to use the Havas bus and hope I can find my hotel when it drops me off
Not travelled into the other airport before..so everything will be a new experience x

As far as I know telephone lines are still safe. Stay in the safety of your hotel and order what you want via telephone.

It is not worth the risk, exposing yourself to any unnecessary dangers..

What do you want to buy? Where will you be staying?

We have wonderful department stores, state of the art shopping malls, IKEA, Carrefour etc etc. If I know what you wnat and where you will stay I can suggest some good alternatives.

For books there is, of course, just one place: Greenhouse in Kadikoy on the Asian side! Come and see me there.

What USA has to decide are,

1. whether or not USA is a sworn NATO member, or just a greedy clown with ulterior motives other than those of NATO's ?
2. Whether or not USA feels Turkey is currently under threat?
3. Whether or not Nato allegiance calls for all members to help other members under threat?

Once USA clarifies which way she feels. everybody has got to do, what he has got to do....

The rest is crap.....

Hi Delidolu!
I checked their webpage, seems to work.
The hotel is located in Aksaray, which is a district where many ukrainians, romanians and russians come while doing small businesses (buying mostly clothes and gold they will re-sell in their country). The webpage goes in 3 languages, turkish, english and russian.
It is a *** hotel. Don't know what speciall class means, i thought was for boutique, but this is not one of them. I personally avoid 'special' classes, if recommended by travel agencies. In their webpage, and not just there, it is said clearly it is a *** hotel.
Some more infos you can find here:Trip Advisor
As i was told, Aksaray is not the best place for women by night. I do not mean to scare you, this is based on a friend's advice. Better wait from some other opinions, too.

There is absolutely no danger for groups numbering over 5 in streets of Aksaray - provided, of course, they all carry M16 rifles at all times and three (each) additional hand grenades at nights...

PS:"Special Class" means weapons can be picked up from the front desk, on request.

Thanks,I really appreciate it but things look so bad now at home,my dad and I had a huge fight today..He won't let me go to Istanbul (though i have already paid for everything and can't cancel now) and....normally I would just ignore him and go but unfotunately I can't do that coz his health is awful. So now I don't know if I'll go after all...I am praying for a miracle now.

=) Cok tesekkur ederim for your help I feel better now....i wish my parents would understand this...I NEED to go there...I want my heart back! lol ok I won't be melodramatic...(yes my boyfriend dumped me he said we don't have future together coz we can't have long-distance realationship,I live in Greece btw and he lives in izmir)...Ok then I guess i will go there after all.I'll post my pix in November then =)

Good luck and have fun! I just got back from Istanbul (early Oct) and loved it - the vibrancy of the city & the night life (extremely crowded on weekend nights but lovely), and the hospitality of everyone I met. I can't wait to return. And honestly, terrorist attacks have hit every country now. I think it's more important to live your life in the present, not always wondering 'what if.' Be passionate about what you care about, hold strong convictions, and live out your life with care. Let us all know where you plan to post your pictures!

Just got back from Istanbul on Saturday... It's as safe and enjoyable as ever.
