wow . . . thanks everyone for the links. I love to listen to the sound of the Adhan, in Istanbul, first hand but this is better than nothing while I'm back in England. It is such a beautiful sound. But I do have a story to tell. On my first trip to Istanbul my family insisted I take a friend as they did not want me there alone (safe as houses though they wouldn't believe me). So I took a friend with me, not a Muslim. We were both very tired when we finally got to bed but my friend was up in the night with an illness she has. She finally got to sleep (through all my snoring) but not long after the sound of the adhan came drifitng through the open window and it woke her up. The next thing I know is she is shaking me violently, telling me to get up and she said "It's you he's calling, not me."

Thans again for the links.

you western ignorants are not aware how valuable this azan is.

hmmm . . . as I'm new to this site I'm not sure how to interpret that comment. On first glance it doesn't sound very friendly but perhaps it's a brand of humour I'm unaware of. Am I the ignorant westerner? I don't think I mentioned an alarm clock . . . I didn't have one as I knew I was so close to the mosque. My friend told me afterwards that my snoring had kept her awake during the night, that's how I knew. She wasn't aware that I had woken up and was listening to that wonderful sound.

I hadn't realised my story would offend anyone. Sorry if that's the case.

Just re read the comment and I may have misinterpreted it. Perhaps the reference was to the fact that in the UK people use their alarm clocks because they don't have the sound of the Azan to wake them. Where I live, in the NW of England, most Muslim homes have a CB radio connection to their mosque and the Azan comes through loud and clear . Sorry if I offended with my last comment.

Got your pm femme but really . . . you could have simply posted what you wanted to say here, there was nothing controversial in what you said.

As I say I'm new. I have come to this site simply to learn Turkish and meet like minded people (thanks to those who sent positive pms). I saw the post about the Azan and it reminded me of an incident so I decided to post it. I didn't realise it would have such an effect. Lesson learned . . . I woke up . . . and smelled the coffee!

Write as many replies to this as you like, this chapter is closed for me.
