Take a look at some of this Hula Dancing links. It is amazing how two cultures so far apart geographically can have such a similar type of dance.

Hi Elisabeth....really nice links, but actually the first one is Tahitian, the second is Hawaiian.

There are some basic stylistic differences. I think you can see them more easily here:

Hula

Tahitian

In the area I live there are many people here from Hawaii and other Pacific islands, thus I have seen the dance styles many times from my classmates and neighbors. They are very protective of their dance and do not teach the "real" dance to outsiders for fear of them commercializing and spoiling it.

I don't like the commercial styles, but these are not commercial links. This has to do with their religion. There are very distinct styles for the women and the man. The Hawaiian dance uses the arms and hands to tell a story.

I agree, there is a similarity of movements, but I'm afraid the Belly Dance has become much to commercialized for my taste.

Thanks for the links Alameda...on second look, I think (at least in my mind - which isn't necessarily an indication of fact) that the Tahitian seems somewhat similar to bellydancing in movement whereas the Hawaiian Hula is more lyrical.

Quite frankly, I find these hard to take seriously. "Belly dance" of this type is an outcome of Orientalism.

Much of this type of dance was popularized by the writings of Flaubert and others who visited Egypt in the 1800s.

There are three basic variations of this dance. The one most Westerners are familiar with are The professional women Esna

Christian and Jewish women performed.

In Islamic society women dance in private for each other. The movements are purported to assist in developing muscles to assist in childbirth, which they most probably do in the keeping joints flexible and muscles strong. Men never see the latter dance.

I think the Tribal Fusion style is trying to relate to the later type of dance, but they still haven't divested themselves of the "Orientalist" fantasy. It would be nice if they would find a good choreographer to tidy things up a bit.

Back to bellydancing .... I can't even pretend to like it! It's not even much like dancing. It seems to involve standing or slightly moving around and shaking certain bits at high speed which says "ouh look how I can move my belly and shake my tits!"

Don't give me any baloney about it being "art"!

At least pole dancers have decency to do it in Men Only clubs

What makes you think Turks do not want to discuss the issue?

Do you know that a fair discussion of the issue, even between historians, are forbidden in some European countries? In France you can go to jail only by saying "There was no Armenian Genocide", even if you are a Professor of history..

If you are, really interested in a fair discussion, pls...but give us your facts....not hearsay crap.

Tell me Armenians did not enjoy 700 hundred years of peace under Ottoman Empire,
Tell me they were not allowed to practice their religion freely,
Tell me they never donned French and Russian unuforms, while the majority of Turks were busy fighting in Gallipoli,
Tell me the Ottomans had no right to fight the rebels and traitors.
Tell me Ottomans were dumb enough to fight Armenians at Empire's weakest state, that they could not have eliminated all Armenians easily a 100 years in advance (year 180 had they an intention of genocide in their minds.
Tell me there were no American missionaries in the area who tried to break the peace among Anatolian people.

Or keep your smart ideas to yourself and let the wounds heal between the two old friends.

Your approach serves neither to the benefit of Turks, nor the Armenians in Armenia, nor Armenians living in Turkey (as Turkish citizens). It only serves a bunch of militant Armenian diaspora, who make their living by selling hatred

Why dont you fight for the rights of Palestinians, with the same bravery, NOW?

Fight for the rights of Palestinians to belly dance?

i think the first song is by blind divine, the second by khundas, and the album can be found on itunes:
Strange Flesh

Track Listing: Love Is All We Have - Blind Divine, Khundas - Shiva In Exile, Sins Of Salome - Angels Of Venice, Black - The Shroud, Prana - Karma Sutra, Cold Room - Knossos, Cask Of Alban - Tim Rayborn, Karakas - Maduro, Pandora’s Box (Opened Remix) - Collide, Honeysuckle Vines - Blind Divine, Bon-Syo - Ruben Van Rompaey. Blood Oil Gold - Solace.
This compilation comes from the same label that has brought the Raqs Gothique scene Knossos, Solace, and Maduro. Strange Flesh is geared towards the darker side of bellydance and is a fantastic combination of Middle Eastern grooves and cyber electronic rhythms with the gothic twist. I have to recommend this musical must-have for both the gothic bellydancer and fans of spicer, dark ethnic-style music.
It’s very difficult to pick my favourite, or the stand-out track here, although I have to say The Shroud has been getting a lot of repeats on my iPod.
Available through Eventide Music Productions.

Back to TURKISH dancing. My favorite Turkish bellydancer is Birgul. This is the best video of her. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1GX8T43ka0

Roman dance: I have this music it is from the soundtrack of "Agir Roman". This is Sema Yildiz. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fAXvk_yH4U
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMKQD9s0aLI

I also have a DVD I picked up in Istanbul by Hale Sultan Raks-I Sultan. This is a clip from the DVD, not my favorite dance but I think she is good.

I really liked the Blacksea Russian one until the women came out! Said in the voice of Antoinne Merrywhether and Blaine Edwards from "Men on dance" from the 80's show "In Living Color" Antoinne says, "mmmm...hhmmmm...what a sight for sore eyes, a bunch of lonely seamen coming into the port....dancing around to show all their strumph. Blaine responds, "Then a bunch of fish come in and ruin the whole masculine vibe."

I don't know of you have opened any of the links or not, but there are some fabulous dancers here and not many of them are actually Belly Dance.

Some of us really enjoy these links, if you don't all you have to do is ignore them instead of raining on other peoples parade.

Ha ha sorry Ros

But I have to remind you:

During Ramadan, Muslims are expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam and to avoid obscene and irreligious sights and sounds. Sexual thoughts and activities during fasting hours are also forbidden. Purity of both thought and action is important. The fast is intended to be an exacting act of deep personal worship in which Muslims seek a raised level of closeness to God Almighty.

And it is ramazan!!

The links you are posting are kind of obscene and irreligious..

BTW. They are perfectly fine for me!!lol
