I haven't been on this site in ages, and do miss some wonderful exchanges. I just wanted to post that our next chapter began when Omer arrived in September. We were married just after Thanksgiving, and life is as wonderful as ever. Thank you again for all of the support from folks on this site- too many to mention.
Cross cultural relationships (especially with a feminist like myself) can and do work, if both are committed to growth and understanding, with a strong foundation of love and trust.
We have our ups and downs, but I feel like the luckiest woman on the planet most days.
I look forward to focusing more now on learning Turkish! Omer may have a hand at trying to translate in the forum.
Cheers and love,
Christine

Tebrikler Christine and Omer!!! I am so glad things are going so well for the both of you.
I will be leaving for Turkey at the end of December to see my Yilmaz and can't wait. I am looking forward to our marriage sometime next year (After 2 1/2 years of having to travel great distances to be together, I can't wait to start our lives together).
I am glad that we were able to share our "cross-cultural" experiences with each other.
Hope to see you and Omer soon!!
Love and best wishes,
Wendy

Hi all,
It is good to be back. We've had quite a journey! Omer SPOKE very little Engish when I met him, but he knew a lot more than he knew that he knew. He is now completely conversational in English- and I honestly do not know how. A year of talking everyday and MSN'ng certainly would not enable me to speak Turkish- but he learned- he definitely has a gift for language. He got a job his second day here as a carpenter/home remodeler apprentice for a Greek contractor- and loves working. His boss is very chatty and Omer's English is amazing. Who knew?
He struggles with the accents of my friends- some are from New York, and some have very strong Philadelphia accents- and speak very quickly!
All in all- communication is not much of an issue at all, and it was my biggest concern for a while. Love and committment can overcome anything.
Now- I have to learn Turkish. In a big way. His sister speaks enough English for me to communicate with her, but his mother- nothing! We webcam with his family every day, and I really want to be able to talk without him translating.
Thanks especially to everyone who gave me all of the translation help in the beginning- and to Cyrano, who helped us daily over the course of a year! We are forever in his debt.

This nice story proves me (once again) that everything is possible when both sides really want to fight for love. Unfortunatelly, this wasnt my case, after trying to abolish all barriers I lost hopes and I gave up But certainly I get so happy and excited when I see this kind of nice stories... CONGRATS! and many many years of happiness to both of you
