Nargile - Turkish Water Pipe

The nargile (NAHR-gee-leh), or Turkish water pipe, has for centuries been an icon of Eastern café culture. By forcing tobacco smoke through water, the nargile partially filters tar and particulates from smoke, in addition to cooling it. Also called a hookah or hubble-bubble, the nargile became popular in Turkey during the 1700s, at the height of the Ottoman Empire, and by the 19th century its pleasures had been discovered by European high society. After World War II, most smokers switched to cigarets. But now the nargile is back--and an increasingly trendy social activity in the coffee-house cultures of Spain, Sweden, Britain, and Asia, as well as the U.S.A.

They are mostly banned in the EU now (apart from personal use at home) as I found out last year in an Arabian restaurant in Spain - due to the tobacco content and appeal to children

HUMMMMM....I believe here in the US it is called a "Bong". I am pretty sure most people here don't use it for tobacco either.

Maybe this is a silly question, but are you allowed to buy one and bring it back to England then....?

They are not illegal, so I guess so. They are just not allowed in restaurants anymore because of the tobacco content.

I really love them too, but that was the answer that our local arabian restaurant gave us . They said that even the aromatic nargiles had a small amount of tobacco in them

Awwwww I have great memories of an evening like that on holiday in Turkey - laying on large cushions on a jetty out in the bay, looking up at the stars, listening to two guys playing guitar, drinking ...and smoking nargile...

I love lazy things like that!

I have two nargiles. One is small and "sorta" portable, the other is large and beautiful. It has Bavarian glass bowl with beautiful gold roses painted on it. The metal part is carved metal with brass, copper and a silver tone metal. The metal parts are engraved.

It's a beautiful smoking experience. My preferred tobacco is peach or apricot flavored tobacco. Sometimes I use rose flavored tobacco. The reason I got it was to have a better smoking experience.

The scent in the room when smoking a nargile is very nice. All in all smoking a nargile is a much more refined experience than cigarettes.

Some people put ice or rose petals in the water. My favorite is apricot or peach and sometimes rose flavored tobacco. I haven't heard of putting milk in the bowl....sounds odd.

I have a problem keeping the charcoal going. There is a whole thing with the charcoal too. I prefer lemon wood charcoal....but keeping it lit can be a problem.
