yes after youtube agrees to remove the video insulting Atatürk. The ban was because of the video uploaded by the user named Turkomaymun, which reportedly contained insults to Atatürk. youtube was banned for 5 days from 18 to 23 Jan 2008.

Just ridiculous.

It's not a state initiative.
some individuals (Turkish citizens) filed a complain to the court.
the court decided according to the law. you know we have a law about insulting Atatürk. that's how our democrasy works.

Which part is ridiculous?
what Turkish citizen did,
our low about insulting Atatürk,
or the court's decision?

Sorry we are not at your level yet.

It İS a state-initiative as the state creates this law and keeps it going. I think its ridiculous what the Turkish citizens did, I think the law is ridiculous, but I dont think the courts decision is ridiculous because they just acted according to law. What I find most ridiculous, is that Youtube goes along with such thoughts..

And no need to apologize You'll get there some day

I guess I am just used to the freedom of speech protected in the American constitution. It seems rediculous to Americans especially, since we are so used to the freedom of speech, that a government would ban something from all the people for one person making their opinion known. Democracy is one thing, freedom of speech is another. I guess I kind of took it forgranted. I can happily state George Bush is a moron without a problem! So I guess the Turkish version of 'Saturday Night Live' would never fly in Turkey?

I am considering the time before Turks accepted the Islam...

Now you will ask, is it Islam then that puts the women to second place...well i can say no but cant give proper examples now...

It's not only islam that's the underlying source of oppression of women, but islam makes it impossible to make any progress. It stifles any growth, because religious views are "holy" and not allowed to criticize. But I completely agree that patriarchy is a far more broad issue then just religion.

All religions have contributed to so many of the problems affecting both males and females today. Christians did burn women accusing them of witchcraft; medieval dungeons saw torture of all kinds made in the name of God allegedly in an effort to purify souls from evil thoughts and to inquire the sincerity of belief. Before Islam made its debut, it was a common practice among Arabs to bury their female babies. Islam came as a revolution by at least giving those babies a chance to live.

In his will left to his son Orhan, Osman the founder of the Ottoman Empire says: I fought all my wars and made all my conquests in the name of God and to spread his word all across the Earth as it is so written in the Holy Book that Jihad is necessary. My meaning was not mere gutter fight nor mindless brutality. You shall too put your sword at the service of God and work to spread his word.

That was exacty the idea the crusaders had when they came to Anatolia. In the name of God they killed, murdered, pillaged, raped, and desacrated the temples of other people.

Today, all malice is still being done in the name of God.
