They are closer in last 5 years, but there are real issues to work out. Honestly though, the longer it goes, the less Turkey will need to be in EU.

what will happen after 10 years? you think that 70 millions of Turks will convert into Christianity en masse?

It has nothing to do with Christianity. They must first successfully complete negotiations with the European Commission on each of the 35 chapters of the EU's acquis. So far they have only met maybe 5 out of 35.
The earliest date that Turkey could enter the EU is 2013, the date when the next financial perspectives (the EU's six year budgetary perspectives) will come into force.
Let's throw the old religion card....

Bulgaria and Romania have carried out an extraordinary reform process and they have gone through a remarkable transformation. They have made further progress... demonstrating their capacity to apply EU principles and legislation than Turkey has.

Why don't you email the EuP (European Parliament) or who ever it is that allows countries into the EU.
I think you will find, they have been going through the process much longer and Turkey has to sort out the Cyprus thing. Anyway, what benefits would Turkey gain from EU membership, apart from freedom of movement? They are already a strong part of NATO and have a thriving tourist, export economy and are virtually self-sufficient when it comes to food.
Romania and Bulgaria still have huge problems with poverty and the disgusting way they treat the disabled and mentally ill and aids victims. I would not say the are superior in anyway as a country. The old communist regimes still hangs around.

Maybe ten or some more years later, we can see the differences and we can look different to "closing/banning parties" + democracy. Who knows...
