Quoting yilgun-7: Game over...
There is no good movie star in Hollywood, Italian and Fench Movie now.
Do you remember and know the last movie stars in the Movie History?
These movie stars have influenced the World Movie.
Who remembers the best known movie stars in the past?
They are =
Clark Gable
Vivien Leigh
Elizabeth Taylor
Errol Flyn
Sean Connery
Victor Mature
Ingrid Bergman
Charleston Laughton
Humprey Bogard
Dean Martin
Jerry Lewis
Catherina Hepburn
Audrey Hepburn
John Wayne
Grace Kelly
Natalia Wood
Robert Mitchum
Richard Widmark
James Cagney
Anthony Perkins
Tony Curtis
John Payne
Charlton Heston
Rock Hudson
Betty Davis
June Allyson
Marlon Brando
Amthony Quinn
Burt Lancester
Orson Welles
Romy Schneider
Clint Eastwood
Doris Day
Virginia Mayo
Sophie Loren
Gina lollobrigida
Brigitte Bardot
Alain Delon
Henry Fonda
Jane Fonda
Catherina Deneuve
etc
|
I don't think Sean Connery and Jane Fonda would like to be considered 'stars of the past' as they are both still making films today! There are many great film actors around today - but I have no time to list them at the moment!
Modified: OK - now I have time!
Kevin Spacey
Dustin Hoffman
Johnny Depp
Benicio del Torro
Gerard Depardieu
Jack Nicholson
Jeff Bridges
William H Macey
Robert de Niro
John Cusack
Meryl Streep
Jodie Foster
Glenn Close
Charleze Theron
Susan Sarandon
Helen Mirren
Imelda Staunton
(just a few that came to mind immediately and all capable of tackling many different types of roles)
Game definitely not over as long as these people are making films!

Quoting yilgun-7: A- BEST PICTURES OF THE MOVİE HISTORY

Best?
Surely you must mean "most popular" or "most critically acclaimed"? I hate this kind of sweeping statement. I am surprised your list does not include "Citizen Kane" (widely thought to be the best cinematography EVER) and "The Third Man".

I think I can safely say I have seen ALL those movies at least once, as I am sure have most UK or American classmates - they are repeated often on TV!!! Why do you say "I don't think so?".
Why do your posts always smack of cultural elitism?

They may be broadcasted loads in Europe and the US, but in TR it is not that easy to see such films if you dont have paid television! Turkish television is a master in broadcasting old Turkish films though

I think Yilgun, in posing this question, misses the obvious fact
In the 1930s, 40s and 50s there was little or no television stars, rock stars etc. and the only "celebrity" was the movie star. In an age before TV, internet, CDs, DVDs.. people flocked to the cinema in their millions and the "stars" played their part well (as ordered by the studios) - always looking glamourous, never drunk, always smiling. For this reason they are remembered fondly and thought to be the "greatest" actors, when in fact, if you compare their acting to today, it is rather false, over-acted and hammy!!!!

Yilgun, not only are you a cultural snob but you are also VERY patronising
Anyone, with even a modicum of film knowledge, would know that Citizen Kane was directed and acted by Orson Wells (as was The Third Man)!
What may be "culture" to you, is merely common knowledge here, Little Boy!

I have seen all the movies you mentioned too - and some more than once as well. I don't mean to be critical Yilgun but have you actually HEARD of half the English/American/European stars you listed? A lot of the names are not right and a couple of them are directors and not movie stars. Also you have mixed modern day film stars such as Jodie Foster and Tom Hanks in with what you call the 'movie greats'. Sorry but I don't think you actually know much about films or film stars of America and Europe

I could not disagree with you more. Yes, in their day the old movie stars were good, but by today´s standards they would be seen as over-the-top.
Today we have great actors like Daniel Day Lewis, Cate Blanchett, Russell Crowe, Jodie Foster, Meryl Streep, Leo DiCaprio, Denzel Washington. When you watch them you don´t get a sense of someone "acting" as is the case if you watch most stars of the past.

How can you know that the people of ´that time´ didnt see them the same way like we see our movie stars now? Peoples ideas of what is aesthetic change over the years, and what may seem ´old fashionably pure and real´ to you, may have seemed ´ordinary and mechanic fashion model´ to them at that time.

I believe many people are interested and knowledgeable in movies and their history, and am dubious that your opinion should be deemed right based on the fact that you have had some discussion with some movie critics.....
You say in an earlier post that there has not been a truly great film for years. What do you base this on? Is it merely the glamour of the old "movie star" that you miss?
There is certainly a lot of crap out there, but then there has always been crap films (the old ´B´ movies were churned out of studios at a huge rate). However, the "great" films are even better than ever and far less "hammy" than films from the 1940s-1950s. There have been truly great films made in the last few decades:- Schlinders List, The Pianist, Road to Perdition, The Talented Mr. Ripley (one of my favourites), Motorcycle Diaries. The Godfather, Goodfellas, Jean de Florette, The Deer Hunter, Midnight Cowboy, Cinema Paradiso, Pulp Fiction... I could list on and on.
Are none of these films appealing to you? Maybe you are watching the wrong type of movies!

Good film.
But have you not seen any of the others? You don´t rate them as good?
Road to Perdition (2002) - Probably one of the best examples of cinematography since ´Citizen Kane´.
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) - Stunning- beautiful direction by Anthony Minghella and haunting music.
Any of the others? Are you sure you are not judging modern movies by the vile celebrity culture that surrounds us?

I would add ´Last Picture Show´ to that list - I watched it yet again this week on TV here - I could add loads more but that was the one that sprung to mind immediately. You mentioned ´Cinema Paradiso´ - how about ´Il Postano´?. There is a huge variety of amazing films out there to be watched! And anyway, what do critics know?

I am pretty sure that the stars of ´The Godfather´, along with Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes and Adrian Brody would rather be known as good actors than as ´movie stars´. You are right though, movie stars and good ´players´ are very different things. Some of the old ´movie stars´ (not particularly the ones you mentioned above) couldn´t act their way out of a paper bag - it was all about glitz, glamour and image - the Golden Days of Hollywood! OK there is still a lot of hype surrounding the movie industry today but I honestly think that - generally - the quality of acting nowadays is better than in ´the old days´.
BTW as Marlon Brando was in ´The Godfather´ he was obviously a movie star and a good actor - though personally I preferred him in ´A Streetcar Named Desire´ - not quite sure why!

To Lady In Red :
You are right. This is a good question.
In my opinion, there is someting different in some movie films.
Something like magic, ripeness, greatness, original-popular creativity, nobility, quality and good taste from movie story, scenario, director, workers to movie players. This is a good team labor.
These combination makes a movie player ", "a movie star."
The critics see this synthesis.
