Turkey needs EU as much as EU needs Turkey..
That is the bottom line.

Are you sure that EU needs Turkey as much? What for?
Global crisis is striking every EU country.
Ordinary citizens are not interested in Turkish issues at all(as members of this site are) and do not want any new countries in it.
They oppose new waves of immigrants and spending money on recent members.
Why in your opinion EU should need Turkey?

There are very many reasons why eu needs turkey.
some of them:
The fight against drug trafficking, cross-border crime and international terrorism.
The issue of energy. The Bosphorus is already a key supply route for the world's energy needs.
Azerbaijan to Turkey pipeline , 10 per cent of the world's tradeable oil production will be passing through Turkey.

Turkey's economy is growing faster than any of the current economies of the European Union.
Half of Turkey's trade is already with the EU and it is already a major market for EU exporters.
Politically you have to show that :
a secular democracy which shows respect for Islam can live comfortably in Europe; and EU is not a christian club.

and and
as EU Commissioner for Enlargement Guenter Verheugen once said:
"Europeans will need Turkey because its population is shrinking"

Personally I am for Turkey in EU and I clearly understand your examples provided here except the final one.
Why Turks should solve the problem of shrinking population not Chinese(in EU countries there is constant flow of Chinese families,Romanians are doing pretty well in population growth too)?
Turkey is wanted by EU authorities perhaps but people who live in member countries have not even the slightest idea about Turkey or if they have it is the country associated with its beauty, cheap prices and being holiday resort for economical holidays or worse stereotyped, biased image of Islamic country despite proclaimed secularism.Media show mostly the other image of Turkey with all its problems, poverty, breaking human rights, social unjustice,etc...
I have also some doubts if EU is not a christian club.Church is still powerful and influentail institution in Europe and its opinion matters

I am all for Turkey joining the EU..However, I don't think this will ever happen. Do you really think they are ever going to admit to a genocide, abolish article 301? I think they are a far way off still from "freedom of speech". Banning "You Tube" just another example....Maybe if their economy improves, possibly. But I tend to think Tukey wants to enter the EU on their terms.

Yes but your sentence is truncated.

Turkey needs EU as much as EU needs Turkey (needs EU).

So that they can utter things like
do this, do that first.
Recognise so-called genocide.
Get rid of article 301.
You are so big to digest, give some territory to Kurdistan, some to Armenia.
Your army is too strong, you don't need that big army.
blah blah blah

I personally dont want EU. It's not that we need it or we dont need it. I just dont want it. If it is a "European union" let it be so! I dont understand why some (or many) Turkish people are so willing to be considered European! We are asian! And I dont think being an asian is inferiority, like some people think...

But that's the thing Si++, Turkey is still a country with laws that don't represent European ideals. The European Union was built on principles of human rights, cooperation and economic stability. Unless Turkey can show this, it will have a hard time entering the EU.

I dont know what you mean with above.
Ermenian issue is not a subject for turkey's application I believe..And the issue somehow, at some stage has to be solved anyway.
Of course we have to get rid of article 301..But not for eu we had to do it for ourselves long time ago!

Could you tell me any country from EU offically said to Turkey that we should give some territory to kurds or ermenians?
Our army is bulky and unnecessarly big. I am not sure if any of the eu countries said anything about it, but I as a Turkish citizen have been saying it many many years..

Yeah, with us, Poles, abandoning UK and going back to our booming economies who's gonna do it?

Well first of all the Romanians and Bulgarians when their restrictions are lifted, following on from that will be the Croatians. It is the NON-EU migrants that will not be coming due to the new restrictions, EU is not affected. It is the EU (Easter Europeans in particular) that pick the strawberries and I for one should know, I live in the fens where the strawberries grow!

Should TÃœRKİYE join the European Community?
What do you think?
What is the European Union?
Is the EU scientific or double standart?
Turkish Public Union say "No" according to the Press.

I personally don't see the benefits of Turkey joining the EU, only to the EU! I think Turkey already has benefit of the EU in terms of tourisms and trading (take note of the lovely Turkish Cherries and Figs in our supermarkets!)

The EU is nothing but red tape, legislation, and Social European funding for useless projects.

Not sure what you mean by scientific - that I doubt!

Why do you think we are Asian? This is not inferiority, no I don't want EU either. But no, we are (also) European. We lived in Europe for centuries. Our grand grand fathers were living in Europe 1 or 2 centuries ago. There are a lot of people in Turkey like that (me included, my grand grand fathers were living almost in the middle of Europe until 1877 when they were forced to migrate to Anatolia).

si++ is right..
Historians know that the Turk Hun Empire ( 400 ) ruled the interior Europe during the Rome Empire, and the Turk Ottoman Empire (1300-1922) ruled the Eastern Europe and Balkans for 400 years.
Historians know that the USA used the Ottoman Empire as a model.
And historians know that TÃœRKİYE was the first country to allow woman to vote in the world.
Turks were already from the Europe...
Please read si++'s words.
