On June 11, a long debate took place in the Swedish parliament in regard to the Foreign Committee report on Human Rights, including five motions calling upon the Swedish government and parliament to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide.

On June 12, 2008, the Swedish parliament, with the votes 245 to 37 (1 abstain, 66 absent), rejected a call for recognition of the 1915 genocide in the Ottoman Empire. On June 11, a long debate took place in the Swedish Parliament in regard to the Foreign Committee report on Human Rights, including five motions calling upon the Swedish Government and Parliament to officially recognize the 1915 Armenian Genocide.

In its answer (2007/2008:UU9), a majority consisting of the ruling alliance parties together with the Social Democrats (opposition party) proposed rejecting the motions, whereby the Green (Miljöpartiet) and the Left (Vänsterpartiet) parties announced their reservations, forcing the Parliament to have a debate in the main chamber before the proposal was voted on.

The argumentation for why recognition should be rejected was based on four main assumptions: “no particular consideration regarding the Armenian situation has ever been in form of an UN Resolution, either in 1985 or any other occasion; the Committee understands that what engulfed the Armenians, Assyrian/Syrians and Chaldeans during the reign of the Ottoman Empire would, according to the 1948 Convention, probably be regarded as genocide, if it had been in power at the time; there is still a disagreement among the experts regarding the different course of events of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. The same applies to the underlying causes and how the assaults shall be classified; [in regard to the development in Turkey] in the time being, it would be venturesome to disturb an initiate and delicate national process.”

There still are some who don't blindfoldedly accept Armenian claims unlike many others.

Thank you very much for posting this...

I posted a similar one in the politics section somewhat in retaliation to quite a few posting by others, who seem to post "charged topics" to create heated, and often one-sided debates.

It is noteworthy to "note" that neither your post nor mine has received much of a response from the above mentioned clowns.

I guess they are bussy choking on their words.

I am more into Quantum Mechanics, and the "Uncertainty Principle"...

Newton is also cool though...

Have you heard of the Vedic saying "What goes around comes around"?

I didn't expect much. It's a news related to Turkey.

It is ridiculous how many parliaments have passed a recognisition without knowing the subject.

I was expecting one from US parliament this year, and it was drawed back after Recep Tayyib met with Bush. And who knows for what. It is a valuable tool to manipulate Turkey as it seems.

What is your objection to interesting and "heated" debates? Are you so nationalistic that you cannot bear to hear uncomfortable truths about your country?

Your "retaliation" will never be successful as most europeans (and sometimes, but not always, the US! ) are quite happy to debate and criticise such topics regarding their own countries.

Perhaps you just hate heated debates?

Would you prefer to discuss cute fluffy bunnies?
Teddy bears?
Kittens?

You didn't include fluffy bunnies in your choices on the other thread, which I find completely biased and insensitive. You have gone to far...how could fluffy bunnies not be included on your list...but you included those awful baby fruit bats...which sparked yet another heated debate. I'm sorry but I have no choice but to whine to admin now!!

Fluffy bunnies were excluded because they are of little or no importance. Are you one of those women who bleat about equal rights for bunnies?

Yeah yeah report me to admin then....

Was this intended to be charged? What is your agenda behind suggesting these topics? You know very well that cynicmystic is allergic to cats (or he's afraid of them, I'm not sure which it is)!
