where does the ´rather´ come from?

doymaktansa
tansa is the suffix to say ´rather´, I think also ´instead of´
For example:
Yarım saat otobüsü beklemektense, taksiyle gidelim
- Rather than waiting half an hour for the bus, let´s go by taxi
(Im not so sure that the sentence I gave is correct, but I can say that tansa is the suffix to say rather )

Rather than being filled by the pieces of love, I prefer to be hungry in this world.

Oh thanks DK - I remember seeing that now - but isn´t the whole suffix -mektense/maktansa? or are you saying it is tense/tansa attached to the infinitive? (which amounts to the same thing I suppose )

Yes you are right, it is mektense/maktansa I guess!
When I was typing I dug in the memories of my mind about the notes I took at Turkish course in İzmir, we had a lesson abotu this and I remember not understanding much of it But oculdnt remember it exactly. But I suppose you are right!

The sense in the Turkish is more "crumbs" or "leftovers" rather than "pieces". It is like saying, I would rather be single that be the mistress who just gets you when your wife is away.
Apart from that, this is the best translation!

For benefıt of the grammar , the "se" is short for "ise" the conditional verb "to be". It adds up to "rather than" this way.
"verb" + tan"(away from)"se" (if its other than) turns into "rather than". This is how I think out it.
