It has been quite a while since I last saw a Turkish movie. A few good ones I cn think of are:

Her şey çok güzel olacak - Everything will be great (Comedy-drama)

Hamam - Turkish bath (Drama)

Im Juli - In July (This is a Turkish-German movie, romantic comedy)

Eşkiya - Bandit (Drama)

Uçurtmayı vurmasınlar - Don't let them shoot the kite (This is an old movie. I watched it some years ago and liked it though. We have a student association here and we might have a Turkish movie night with this one soon)

There are also some recent movies I didn't see but got international awards. Among these, you can try:

Uzak - Distant (Drama)
And there are many award-winning movies by director Fatih Akın. But I didn't see these.

There are many more, but these are good for a start.

I saw Uzak because my gf read about the prizes, but it's not that good really. You are better off with the first one's mentioned.

The odd thing is that there is a certain small subculture of people in the U.S. that thoroughly enjoy BAD Turkish films, even though they have no grasp of your language.

I've long been an Ed Wood fan, he was a then-little-known writer/producer/director of really awful American films. There was a movie "It Came from Hollywood" in the early 80s that highlighted his and a lot of other really bad American films (mostly from the 1950s).

That's where I discovered Ed Wood. And with videotape, anyone could get these bad films at the store and enjoy them for themselves. What made this better was that these films were usually not copyrighted, so they were CHEAP!

In addition, in the early 1990s, there was a show Mystery Science Theater 3000 where the host and his robot friends made fun of bad cinema (again, mostly science fiction and horror films) while the non-copyrighted films played behind them.

Recently some on the Internet (Seanbaby, I think) discovered some Turkish remakes and posted bits of them on the net. I now own a copy of what they call "Turkish Star Wars" (could that be "The Man Who Saved the World"?). I want to get what they call (and label on the box) "Turkish Star Trek."

These films are kind of a grey area copyright-wise. Whoever is selling the tapes isn't paying the producers. However, the producers of these films didn't apparently get the rights to make Turkish versions of the American original films like E.T., Star Trek, Star Wars, The Excorcist, etc.

It's both hard and easy to find these films on videotape. You won't tend to find them at Walmart. Usually you'll find that at odd record stores or at swap meets.

I only can hope that Turkish films are not like Turkish TV, which is without a doubt the worst television i have ever seen anywhere in the world! :-S

Well, I agree that "Hababam Sınıfı" is a good comedy. "GORA" is funny, too, but the humour there is a little bit too rude. And I would not say that Turkish TV is bad. Actually there exist some nice Turkish TV shows and TV series.

Since I now own "The Man Who Saved the World" (AKA "Turkish Star Wars") on VHS, I was wondering what other odd Turkish "adaptations" there are out there. Which is to say, so-bad-they're-good Turkish copies of American films.

So far, I know there's a Turkish version of Wizard of Oz, The Excorcist, Star Trek, and E.T. What might the Turkish titles of these films be? Might be interesting to get the original films over the net versus buying VHS bootlegs. Of course the region will likely be wrong (unless I buy a region-free player from J-List, been thinking about that) and even with that the video format is probably incompatible (Euro TV is in a different format than U.S.).

"Gegen die Wand" should be nice, it's a German-Turkish production. But I haven't seen it yet, it's always rented out at the videostore..
