doesn´t "jealous" and "envious" mean the same anyway?

I think there is a subtle difference-but I never figured it out!

If you google ´the difference between envy and jealousy´ you get all sorts of opinions!

 no in English there is a major difference. My explanation would be that jealousy is unfounded and irrational and envy is understandable.

Example of both the word jealous and the word envy: My ex-girlfriend has a new boyfriend and I am really jealous of him and cannot sleep nights but I must admit that I envy his beautiful new car and wish I were so rich. 

    My Redhouse dictionary does give kýskanç as the meaning of both jealous and envious but I think most English speakers make a distinction at least some of the time.

Well, I just thought of the phrase gýpta etmek which Redhouse translates as envy without malice.....but I am only a native English speaker and have never heard it used in conversation.
