in english we wouldn´t use a trouble but just ´trouble´ = what trouble you are in

if you use some of alternative words given in site dictionary - e.g. state, condition, state of affairs, then you would put the a in.

 To add another comment about the English version:

For the question to remain a question, your word order needs to change.

What trouble are you in? 

I also see ´circumstance´ and ´situation´ are possible meanings for hal.

So maybe another translation could be-

So what is this situation?

a lot depends on context doesn´t it?  but i think your last translation looks like the best one
