Quoting caliptrix:

I must learn Turkish: Türkçe öğrenmeliyim.

Why is it öğrenmeliyim and not öğrenilmeliyim ???
Surely a long term act of learning is passive and therefore requires the -il- suffix......

Quoting Elisa:

"In 15 weeks I am going to Turkey
I don't have much time."

On beş hafta içinde Türkiye'ye gidiyorum. Çok vaktim yok.

Isn't that right?

Why vaktim - I assume this is somehow derived from vakit but cannot understand how

I thought that zaman was "time".......

Here is a list of nouns losing their final vowel when you add a suffix starting with a vowel. There is no rule for it, but it is indicated in the dictionary.
Ex: fikir = idea / fikrim = my idea

And zaman and vakit are synonyms. Vakit comes from Arab I think..
