Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Anyway... have you ever been to anywhere in Istanbul outside of the touristic places? I think not..

Ummm....you are very right in that beauty is a subjective phenomenon...however for me Istanbul is the most amazing currently still alive city in the world. I think it has something to do with all the layers of civilization and cross cultural integration.

Istanbul undeniably has its own character and charm, but I wouldn´t say that it´s the most amazing city in the world, I find that to be a pretty strange thing to say anyway, kind of "eurocentric". I agree that Istanbul has some phenomenal landmarks and history, but as a city you can really only visit and tiny fraction of it, because the rest is just slums, with streets so tiny you can only park on them.

this is only one of many poems dedicated to istanbul, it describes the unique beauty it has
By the way Yeats is one of the greatest poets of the 20th century
Byzantium a poem by William Butler Yeats
The unpurged images of day recede; The Emperor´s drunken soldiery are abed; Night resonance recedes, night walkers´ song After great cathedral gong; A starlit or a moonlit dome disdains All that man is, All mere complexities, The fury and the mire of human veins.
Before me floats an image, man or shade, Shade more than man, more image than a shade; For Hades´ bobbin bound in mummy-cloth May unwind the winding path; A mouth that has no moisture and no breath Breathless mouths may summon; I hail the superhuman; I call it death-in-life and life-in-death.
Miracle, bird or golden handiwork, More miraclc than bird or handiwork, Planted on the star-lit golden bough, Can like the cocks of Hades crow, Or, by the moon embittered, scorn aloud In glory of changeless metal Common bird or petal And all complexities of mire or blood.
At midnight on the Emperor´s pavement flit Flames that no faggot feeds, nor steel has lit, Nor storm disturbs, flames begotten of flame, Where blood-begotten spirits come And all complexities of fury leave, Dying into a dance, An agony of trance, An agony of flame that cannot singe a sleeve.
Astraddle on the dolphin´s mire and blood, Spirit after Spirit! The smithies break the flood. The golden smithies of the Emperor! Marbles of the dancing floor Break bitter furies of complexity, Those images that yet Fresh images beget, That dolphin-torn, that gong-tormented sea.

yes this poem is amazing considering Yeats never visited Istanbul in his waking life, but from his reading and his exposure to Byzantine art he made Byzantium his emblem of the Holy City. His introduction to its art came through the mosaics he saw in Palermo and Ravenna. He was moved by this hieratic mosaic art, and his invocation of the ecclesiastical figures that are depicted there marries impressions of the shimmering, rippled surface made by thousands of tiny squares of color, with the spiritual import of what is depicted.

...again as I said, it is subjective......so to me it is the most amazing currently still alive city in the world......to you it is not............we both have our own subjective opinions....I really don´t see what is Eurocentric about it.....after all it is partly in Europe and partly in Asia.............and if you really think about it...the definition of Europe seems to be pretty subjective and fluid as well. As for those narrow streets....If one can park on them....you can walk on them. I take no joy in a city drive....particularly if that drive is in Istanbul. Cars are a big problem there.
I just think for me, Istanbul is the most amazing city in the world....as for any European thing.....I have no opinion about that....but it does look like an interesting program....hmmm it should be shown to the Turkish Agenda thread...
Program it takes time to download....there are 93 pages, but if you want ideas of what to do, there are a lot of things listed in the program

Yes. Again, there are great places in Istanbul, but so there are in other cities in the world. But everybody wants to feel special.
By the way, I´m really happy that Istanbul is going to be the European Cultural Capital for 2010!

Euro-asian centric...right It´s so eurocentric to forget that Istanbul is mostly Asian
I can not say Istanbul is the greatest city in the world... I haven´t been everywhere. But I have to say culture wise, it´s on top of my visited-cities list. On other aspects it doesn´t always score so good, like being groped in the tram-wise.

Haha, you´re right!
I think that another thing that gives Istanbul its nice feel is the openness of Turkish people in general, their hospitality and laid-back attitudes.

You can get groped anyplace...all you need is a crowded space.....hmmmm maybe they don´t grope in Holland? I hate any crowded space for exactly that reason, but having grown up in a groping latitude, I´ve evolved a strategy to deal with it. NYC must be grope capital of the world.

They also grope in Holland, but it hardly ever happens. I have only been groped in Holland during festivals, and in clubs or bars. Not in public places on a normal day, in an every day situation. I have never been groped in public transport in Holland or other countries, except for the tram in Istanbul... I don´t know why groping is linked to trams there, but it happens in one form or another every single time! I wonder if there is a club of tram-gropers there, that just follows me around...
The metro has treated me well though Haven´t experienced groping there, neither in the city busses or the ferries! And how great are those ferries.. really love those in Istanbul. Especially when people start to sell stuff. I still feel sorry that I didn´t buy a hat/manual hand-ven in one, on the boat the the islands...

As for Istanbul being the most beautiful city in the world - I haven´t seen all the cities yet so can´t really say it is or isn´t one I just know I loved it, I mean the city centre, mosques museums and charming little cafes and tea gardens. The fact that it looks way more exotic than polish cities might have influenced my perception, though But once you´re not in the centre, you get to see dilapidated buildings and boring blocks of flats just like everywhere else. Ok, not everywhere, but like most big cities.
