VakifGunesTTelekom ISTANBUL scored yesterday afternoon a second consecutive win in the Playoffs 12 of the 2011 CEV Champions League to advance to the next round of the competition and try there to book a spot for the final four coming up next March 19-20 at the “Burhan Felek” Volleyball Hall.

So they joined the other 2 Turkish teams (Eczacıbaşı Vitra, FB Acıbadem) in final 6.

It seems like all the Turkish teams seem stronger than other 3 teams who qualified as well (This is a feat that the Italian teams would do in the previous years). However because of the CEV´s decision, 2 teams of the same country cannot advance to the final. So we will see 2 Turkish teams in final 4 and one team in the final.

Volleyball´s queens to be crowned in Istanbul

Istanbul is ready for an extraordinary weekend in volleyball, hosting the final four of the 2011 CEV Women’s Champions League over the weekend with Two Turkish teams in contention.

Azerbaijani Rabita Baku side will take on Scavolini Pesaro on Saturday followed a few hours later by the two Turkish sides, Fenerbahçe Acıbadem and Vakıfbank Güneş Sigorta Türk Telekom, facing off in their own semifinal clash. All games will be played at the Burhan Felek Volleyball Hall in the Üsküdar district of Istanbul.

Two Turkish rivals’ quest for a spot in Sunday’s final will add bigger flavor to the final four.

Fenerbahçe Acıbadem’s international and well-decorated stars like Lioubov Shashkova, Fofao, Christiane Fürst and Eda Erdem clearly stated their intention to claim the trophy in front of the home audience. This past December in Doha, Qatar, they sailed confidently through all rounds of the 2010 FIVB Club World Championships to bring home the title without losing a set.

Fenerbahçe Acıbadem won three of the last four meetings against its Istanbul rival this season, but confidence at the Vakıf Güneş camp is quite high.

“We have been very good this season, we are close to the top spots in the league, the domestic cup and European competition,” Vakıf Güneş manager Muhammet Görken told Anatolia news agency. “We are ready to win the title.”

“They have the advantage of playing in front of their fans, but our team is used to situations like that,” added Görken. “We have won all our games in Europe this year and want to keep the streak alive.”

When asked if the winner of the all-Turkish tie, Görken was confident that the trophy will not be let abroad.

“Scavolini Pesaro is one of the strongest teams in Europe and Rabita Baku is in good form recently, but I think the two Turkish sides are in better shape.”

If Fenerbahçe Acıbadem or Vakıf Güneş wins the title, it will be the first time that a Turkish volleyball team wins the top championship in Europe.

Previously in women’s competition, Vakıf Güneş won the Top Teams Cup in 2004 and the Challenge Cup in 2007, following Eczacıbaşı’s Cup Winners’ Cup victory in 1999. The only men’s Turkish team to win a trophy was Arkasspor. They won the GM Capital Challenge in 2009.

The Baku-Pesaro game starts at 3 p.m. and the all-Turkish semifinal starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The third-place playoff and the final match will be played at the same times on Sunday.

Sensation in Istanbul as Vakıfbank-Güneş-TT defeats pre-favorite and World champion Fenerbahçe
2011 CEV Champions League - Women
Istanbul, Turkey, March 19, 2011. What only a few may had anticipated, turned actually into reality this afternoon at the “Burhan Felek” Volleyball Hall as VakıfGüneşTTelekom ISTANBUL shattered the dreams of Fenerbahçe Acıbadem. The team that was specifically and almost exclusively formed to win this year’s CEV Champions League left the court in tears for the disappointment of a completely yellow sports hall that only waited for additional glory after the girls captained by Natasa Osmokrovic had totally dominated the Club World Championship staged this past December in Doha, Qatar. VakıfGüneş played well, motivated and stayed cool in a final rush where the tension was to be “touched” even in the air to defeat Fenerbahç 3:2 (19-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-19, 15-11) and challenge Rabita BAKU of Azerbaijan in the final game.

VakıfGüneşTTelekom completes Turkish fairy tale in Istanbul
2011 CEV Champions League - Women

Istanbul, Turkey, March 20, 2011. After the major sensation already caused in yesterday’s semifinal by defeating the pre-favorites of FenerbahçeAcıbadem, the girls of VakıfGüneşTTelekom ISTANBUL completed a memorable weekend to turn into Turkey’s first club in history being able to claim the CEV Champions League. It was an almost one-sided final game (3:0, 25-13, 25-20, 25-18), but mostly because the team mentored by Giovanni Guidetti displayed a performance that was absolutely outstanding in every single fundamental and left no chance at all to the Azeri glories of Rabita BAKU. Two-time European champion Malgorzata Glinka could not ask for more to complete her splendid comeback in the international Volleyball arena after a two-year long pause as she won the trophy she had longed for since the start of her career and she was even chosen as MVP of this stellar final four.

Turkey becomes world champion in volleyball championship

22 August 2011, Monday / TODAYSZAMAN.COM,

Turkish women became champion first time in history in the 2011 FIVB Women’s World Volleyball Championship after Turkey defeated China in Sunday’s game.

During the championship, which was kicked off with group matches on Friday in TVF Başkent and Ankara Sport halls, Turkey could advance without losing points in its first group.

Turkey was only defeated by China 3-1 in three matches in its second stage group matches. Turkey advanced as second in the group to a semi-final.

Turkey could hardly defeat in a very difficult match Serbia in semi-finals with 3-2 and advanced to the final to face China.

Turkey’s final match with China is also reminicisent of a final match between China and Turkey in 2007 in Mexico. Turkey lost to China with 3-1 and received the silver medal.

This time Turkey did not give a chance to its rival and defeated China with 3-0.

This is the fifth time Turkey participates in the FIVP championships. Turkey became sixth in 1993 in Slovakia, 13th in 1999 in Portugal, second in Mexico in 2007 and fourth in 2009 Thailand.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan congratulated the volleyball team by sending a letter to the chairman of the Turkey Volleyball Federation Erol Ünal Karabıyık.

President Abdullah Gül and Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Çiçek also sent congratulatory letters to the volleyball team.

Note : Congratulations Girls !!

Volleybal is something we are successful in women (seniors and juniors) but not that much in men (way to go for you boys).

Last year Turkish women volleyball league was the srongest in the World as depicted by Ze Roberto, Brazil national team and FB Acıbadem SK coach, the top 3 Turkish team would target championship in any league in the World. Because of that strength we see many World stars playing here in Turkey.
