Fenerbahçe SK women volleyball team will become more strong with the transfer of Kasia Skowronska who is expected to sign today at 15:30.

Fenerbahçe SK seemed very strong for the completed season. They won the Turkish championship and lost the European Championship in the final. This year they are aiming to win the European championship as well. So they transfer some big names. Earlier this week, they also transferred Christiane Fürst.

I hope the girls have a splendid time in Turkey. A great place to be transferred to! Now that these two are no longer on our team, and Agata Mroz-Olszewska is dead, women volleybal in poland is going to suck

Granted, but let´s not forget the factor and effect of Anka, Celina, Ewa and Irenka (my favourite)! I have a strong feeling that women volleyball in Poland has still a brillant future and is pregnant to many, many successes if the mentioned girls assist each other, don´t lose eye contacts and remain beautiful.

My two cents! {#emotions_dlg.bigsmile}

By the way, needless to say, the possibility that I fall any time in love with Irenka, may totally and permanently change the future for polish women volleyball.

You mean your national team? Aren´t they so-good anymore to play in your national team?

I´m sorry for Mroz´s early passing away. I remember watching her play in European championship 2003 in Ankara.

FBSK also transferred Lioubov Kılıç which is one of the best opposite hitter in Europe. Actually when FB become popular, win cups in any branch of sport in Turkey, that branch also become popular, rivals try to transfer good players in order to pass FB just like VGSTT and Eczacıbaşı, and because of this that sport branch develops. You know FB is the most hated and also most loved sports club in Turkey Wink

In women basketball FB transferred Diana Taurasi, Penny Taylor as well, after then GS transferred very famous players from WNBA, but it seems it is not possible for them to pass FB again next year...

But you have lost Yekaterina Gamova who was very effective last season. I am not sure the newcomers can compensate her.

Eczacıbaşı transferred Antonella Del Core & Jenny Barazza. As i said before FB is pushing them to transfer good players. People were not interested in women volleyball before till FB decided to invest much on it by the help of Acıbadem. Now Turkish league is full of famous women volleyballers.

Neslihan Darnel will also be in Eczacıbaşı squad next year. Turkish league is one of the top ones in Europe (together with Italian league). It´s very rare to see the Italians playing in other leagues. It´s give you a clue about the quality of the Turkish league seeing them play here.

Needlessto say that Eczacıbaşı will have a wonderful squad next season, lets see if they can be a wonderful team, I think Del Core is one of the best spiker in Europe, they also transferred two good middle blockers as well, Dushkyevich & Barazza, Mirka-Neslihan & Del Core awesome spiker trio. Only the problem for them is the setter position which is very critical when the team has problems of receiving, imo Elif Ağca is a little bit weak for this position. Whatsoever they have turned out a wonderful squad. Now all loser gs and bjk fans can support them as they were supporting VGSTT last season.

It was not nice to watch one team devastating the others. You want to see some exciting fight between 2 teams. Nonetheless I was contented last season watching them beat all the teams in Europe competition (except for the final of final 4).

Unfortunately we lost it 3-1. Still I think we have also qualified for the next round. Our next 2 matches will decide our position in the first round. The better position, the better advantage in the next round.

So that means we´re gonna watch a Turkie vs Serbia match in the next round.

I watched Skowronska and Glinka in their first match in Turkie yesterday. Glinka seemed tired while Sko was devastating. You wonder why Polish coach didn´t include Sko in the Polish team for the World women championship which ended last wekend. She sure would make a big difference for them.

Captain underlines Fenerbahce confidence

Lausanne, Switzerland, December 13, 2010 – Fenerbahce captain Cigdem Rasna believes the Turkish contenders have the "potential" to win the 2010 FIVB Women´s Club World Championship as they prepare to compete in the premier annual club tournament in Doha, Qatar from December 15-21.

This is the first Club World Championship appearance for the Istanbul-based team and if they do finish top of the podium, they will become the first Turkish side to achieve a feat managed only by clubs from Brazil and Italy in the past.

Cigdem said: "I can say that we are in the process of developing our game as a team. We have very experienced players and coaches who raise the prospect of winning the World Cup.

"The championship in Qatar is very important for our team. It is one of our goals this season and we will do our best to finish first by winning all the games. We are very excited to take part in this event and feel very honoured to have been invited."

Fenerbahce qualified for Doha as a wildcard entry after finishing runners-up in the CEV Champions League to Italy´s Bergamo, who will also compete at the tournament. Cigdem says Bergamo will not be the only threat to the hopes of Jose Roberto Guimaraes´s team, who face Brazil´s Sollys Osasco in their opening match on 16 December.

Fenerbahce will also face Thailand´s Federbrau in Pool A, and the skipper added: "I expect that we are going to see very high-quality games. I am looking forward to this cup as this is my first visit to Qatar."

The fifth round of play in the 2011 CEV Champions League came to a close tonight with all three Turkish teams competing in the women’s division displaying excellent performances and scoring convincing victories to celebrate their promotion to the Playoffs 12. Once again this shows that Volleyball is really being played at an extremely high-level there and all these teams will be serious contenders for the final crown that will be at stake this coming spring.

Pool A – Bank BPS Fakro MUSZYNA (POL) vs. VakifGunesTTelekom ISTANBUL (TUR) 1:3 (25-23, 20-25, 14-25, 14-25)

The unbelievable support of the Polish fans did not help Bank BP Fakro MUSZYNA in their mission to defeat the guests from Turkey who won the match 3:1. The game finished with the same score of the previous clash in Istanbul and VakifGunes could celebrate its promotion to the Playoffs 12 with one leg still to go.

Pool B – FenerbahceAcibadem ISTANBUL (TUR) vs. ZOK SPLIT 1700 (CRO) 3:0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-13)

In front of 3’000 fans FenerbahceAcibadem ISTANBUL dominated the game against ZOK SPLIT 1700 held tonight at the “Burhan Felek” Volleyball hall. That was quite a weak opponent for the girls who recently claimed the crown at the 2010 FIVB Club World Championships in Doha, Qatar, but nevertheless the Turks started the game with 5 foreign players for a quick 25-10 and with Kasia Skowronska scoring 7 points in the opening set. The second set was a carbon copy of the first, the Croatians could not attack, defend and receive as they wished, while Natasa Osmokrovic and Christiane Fürst dominated the game as the locals seized a quick 25-11. The young Croatian side stood up early in the third set and increased the tempo when Fenerbahce went up 8:7 at the first technical break; however for the Croatians it was almost impossible to stand such an opponent equipped with many world stars, ISTANBUL sped up to 16:10 and finished the match 3:0 by claiming the last set 25-13.

Pool C – Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL (TUR) vs. CV Jamper Aguere LA LAGUNA (ESP) 3:0 (25-19, 25-11, 25-12)

Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL stays on top of the standings in Pool C after five rounds of play as the Turks scored a quick 3:0 this afternoon at the “Burhan Felek” Volleyball hall to defeat Spain’s CV Jamper Aguere LA LAGUNA. Both sides started the match with the necessary concentration and scoring a few points. However, the major experience of Eczacibasi made soon the difference and the first time-out was there at 8:6 for the hosts. When the home side forced the score to 13:9 the the Spanish side asked for a first time-out. Bown’s efforts pushed Eczacibasi to lead 16:14 and then to 20:16. The Spanish mentor asked another time-out to stop that acceleration but Eczacibasi smoothly ended the set 25-19. The second set started with the real domination of Eczacibasi VitrA. Dushkyevich’s effective serves forced the Spanish team to commit many errors and Spanish coach Ruben Martinez asked his first time-out at 4:0. Although LA LAGUNA balanced the score at 6:6, Eczacibasi went again up 8:6. Bown’s effective serves dominated the scene and the Turks scored 8 consecutive points to lead 14:7. As errors continued to affect the Spaniards, the home side finished the set 25-11 and made it to the provisional 2:0. In the third set, a loss of concentration continued to be felt in the Spanish side and Eczacibasi was up at both mandatory stops (8:5 and 16:1. After the score was 21:12, Eczacibasi VitrA finished easily 25-12 with Heather Bown’s killing serves. With this 3:0 Eczacibasi will for sure finish first in Pool C not depending on the result of the last game against Voléro in Switzerland.

VakifGunesTTelekom ISTANBUL scored yesterday afternoon a second consecutive win in the Playoffs 12 of the 2011 CEV Champions League to advance to the next round of the competition and try there to book a spot for the final four coming up next March 19-20 at the “Burhan Felek” Volleyball Hall.

So they joined the other 2 Turkish teams (Eczacıbaşı Vitra, FB Acıbadem) in final 6.

It seems like all the Turkish teams seem stronger than other 3 teams who qualified as well (This is a feat that the Italian teams would do in the previous years). However because of the CEV´s decision, 2 teams of the same country cannot advance to the final. So we will see 2 Turkish teams in final 4 and one team in the final.

Volleyball´s queens to be crowned in Istanbul

AA photo

AA photo

Istanbul is ready for an extraordinary weekend in volleyball, hosting the final four of the 2011 CEV Women’s Champions League over the weekend with Two Turkish teams in contention.

Azerbaijani Rabita Baku side will take on Scavolini Pesaro on Saturday followed a few hours later by the two Turkish sides, Fenerbahçe Acıbadem and Vakıfbank Güneş Sigorta Türk Telekom, facing off in their own semifinal clash. All games will be played at the Burhan Felek Volleyball Hall in the Üsküdar district of Istanbul.

Two Turkish rivals’ quest for a spot in Sunday’s final will add bigger flavor to the final four.

Fenerbahçe Acıbadem’s international and well-decorated stars like Lioubov Shashkova, Fofao, Christiane Fürst and Eda Erdem clearly stated their intention to claim the trophy in front of the home audience. This past December in Doha, Qatar, they sailed confidently through all rounds of the 2010 FIVB Club World Championships to bring home the title without losing a set.

Fenerbahçe Acıbadem won three of the last four meetings against its Istanbul rival this season, but confidence at the Vakıf Güneş camp is quite high.

“We have been very good this season, we are close to the top spots in the league, the domestic cup and European competition,” Vakıf Güneş manager Muhammet Görken told Anatolia news agency. “We are ready to win the title.”

“They have the advantage of playing in front of their fans, but our team is used to situations like that,” added Görken. “We have won all our games in Europe this year and want to keep the streak alive.”

When asked if the winner of the all-Turkish tie, Görken was confident that the trophy will not be let abroad.

“Scavolini Pesaro is one of the strongest teams in Europe and Rabita Baku is in good form recently, but I think the two Turkish sides are in better shape.”

If Fenerbahçe Acıbadem or Vakıf Güneş wins the title, it will be the first time that a Turkish volleyball team wins the top championship in Europe.

Previously in women’s competition, Vakıf Güneş won the Top Teams Cup in 2004 and the Challenge Cup in 2007, following Eczacıbaşı’s Cup Winners’ Cup victory in 1999. The only men’s Turkish team to win a trophy was Arkasspor. They won the GM Capital Challenge in 2009.

The Baku-Pesaro game starts at 3 p.m. and the all-Turkish semifinal starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The third-place playoff and the final match will be played at the same times on Sunday.

Sensation in Istanbul as Vakıfbank-Güneş-TT defeats pre-favorite and World champion Fenerbahçe
2011 CEV Champions League - Women
Istanbul, Turkey, March 19, 2011. What only a few may had anticipated, turned actually into reality this afternoon at the “Burhan Felek” Volleyball Hall as VakıfGüneşTTelekom ISTANBUL shattered the dreams of Fenerbahçe Acıbadem. The team that was specifically and almost exclusively formed to win this year’s CEV Champions League left the court in tears for the disappointment of a completely yellow sports hall that only waited for additional glory after the girls captained by Natasa Osmokrovic had totally dominated the Club World Championship staged this past December in Doha, Qatar. VakıfGüneş played well, motivated and stayed cool in a final rush where the tension was to be “touched” even in the air to defeat Fenerbahç 3:2 (19-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-19, 15-11) and challenge Rabita BAKU of Azerbaijan in the final game.

VakıfGüneşTTelekom completes Turkish fairy tale in Istanbul
2011 CEV Champions League - Women

Istanbul, Turkey, March 20, 2011. After the major sensation already caused in yesterday’s semifinal by defeating the pre-favorites of FenerbahçeAcıbadem, the girls of VakıfGüneşTTelekom ISTANBUL completed a memorable weekend to turn into Turkey’s first club in history being able to claim the CEV Champions League. It was an almost one-sided final game (3:0, 25-13, 25-20, 25-18), but mostly because the team mentored by Giovanni Guidetti displayed a performance that was absolutely outstanding in every single fundamental and left no chance at all to the Azeri glories of Rabita BAKU. Two-time European champion Malgorzata Glinka could not ask for more to complete her splendid comeback in the international Volleyball arena after a two-year long pause as she won the trophy she had longed for since the start of her career and she was even chosen as MVP of this stellar final four.

It was the night everyone had dreamed of since weeks here in Turkey, with a group of young girls – mostly training at the Volleyball school founded only a couple of years ago by the local Federation – writing history for this country and claiming the first gold medal in history and in any age group. Nothing was working for the European Champion, FB Acibadem ended the first stage via combined attacks 12-25.

While local rivals having a struggle on the court, about 4000 Fenerbahce supporters were singing victory songs 4-8, Vakifgunes bounced back with a short affect 8-9, they could not keep up without captain Gozde Sonsirma who was injured in the second match 12-16, when it was 14-19, Vakifgunes trainer Guidetti booked for unsportsmenship behaviour, finally, FBA seized the set 20-25.

Even though host moved to 3-0 in third set, FB Acibadem caught up them 3-3 and managed to lead the first mandatory stop 7-8. Opposite to first two sets, Vakifgunes changed the formation, they started to play their usual position this year, they were so confident then to arrive to second tech time out 16-12. After the break, referee punished FB Acibadem’s Brazilian trainer Jose Roberto with a yellow card, when guest team requested second optional time out, difference was huge 18-12. Malgorzata Glinka and Jelena Nikolic were starring in offense while the others of team joined them so well 25-18.

Home team was faster than ever in fourth set 4-1 to 6-2, but they were not tall on the net when reception was not good, FBA used this deficiency to come to 12-10. Vakifbank did not give up anyway, this time Ze Roberto called the second time out while Gunes was shining 18-13, however it did not work, Vakifgunes snatched the set 25-19.

A balanced tie break was continued up to 6, then Vakifgunes sped up 8-6 changing the courts, but guest staff easily even up 8-8, Maja Poljak&Ozge Cemberci co. rised up again 11-9 where Fenerbahce stopped the game. Host brought the game back but missed last 4 services, additional reception error made it 12-13 approaching to end. Last two mistakes of home team was announcing 2010-2011 champion 12-15, Fenerbahce Acibadem won the match 3-2.

Turkey becomes world champion in volleyball championship

22 August 2011, Monday / TODAYSZAMAN.COM,

Turkish women became champion first time in history in the 2011 FIVB Women’s World Volleyball Championship after Turkey defeated China in Sunday’s game.

During the championship, which was kicked off with group matches on Friday in TVF Başkent and Ankara Sport halls, Turkey could advance without losing points in its first group.

Turkey was only defeated by China 3-1 in three matches in its second stage group matches. Turkey advanced as second in the group to a semi-final.

Turkey could hardly defeat in a very difficult match Serbia in semi-finals with 3-2 and advanced to the final to face China.

Turkey’s final match with China is also reminicisent of a final match between China and Turkey in 2007 in Mexico. Turkey lost to China with 3-1 and received the silver medal.

This time Turkey did not give a chance to its rival and defeated China with 3-0.

This is the fifth time Turkey participates in the FIVP championships. Turkey became sixth in 1993 in Slovakia, 13th in 1999 in Portugal, second in Mexico in 2007 and fourth in 2009 Thailand.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan congratulated the volleyball team by sending a letter to the chairman of the Turkey Volleyball Federation Erol Ünal Karabıyık.

President Abdullah Gül and Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Çiçek also sent congratulatory letters to the volleyball team.

Note : Congratulations Girls !!

Volleybal is something we are successful in women (seniors and juniors) but not that much in men (way to go for you boys).

Last year Turkish women volleyball league was the srongest in the World as depicted by Ze Roberto, Brazil national team and FB Acıbadem SK coach, the top 3 Turkish team would target championship in any league in the World. Because of that strength we see many World stars playing here in Turkey.

Turkey loses Worlds wild card to Italy

Turkey lost its chance to win a wild card spot at the women’s Volleyball World Cup because of lobbying, the chairman of the Turkish Volleyball Federation has said.

The federation applied to world volleyball’s governing body after Turkey finished third at the recent European Championship with request that they be granted a wild card spot at the global event, Erol Ünal Karabıyık told Anatolia news agency.

The wild card, however, was granted to Italy, which will go directly to the World Cup. Turkey twice beat Italy in the recent tournament – the second game securing a third-place finish and winning Turkey a bronze medal.

“It is only a question of lobbying. We did our best, but it didn’t happen,” Karabıyık said.

Playing in the World Cup is important because it would give the team a chance to compete in next year’s Olympics in London, the chairman said.

Italy do not deserve it. We beat them twice in the last championship.

Legendary win for Arkas IZMIR to bring Turkey to top four in Europe
2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League – Men

Izmir, Turkey, March 1, 2012. The very first men’s Volleyball team from Turkey able to take a European trophy – it was back in 2009 –, Arkas IZMIR, wrote another memorable chapter of its saga tonight by qualifying for the final four of the 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League scheduled for March 17-18 in Lodz, Poland, and play there in the semifinals the hosts of PGE Skra BELCHATOW. After losing last week in straight sets to Lokomotiv NOVOSIBIRSK, tonight the guys of Arkas stormed back to score first a 3:2 win (25-27, 18-25, 25-22, 25-23, 16-14) and then take the deciding golden set with the score of 15-11.
Arkas IZMIR lived up to its fame for being a team that does not surrender in any circumstances and stormed back from two sets down (25-27, 18-25) after clearly feeling the pressure for what was an all-or-nothing mission. Helped by some 5’000 fans in attendance at “Karsiyaka” hall, Arkas clipped the next three sets with Colombian Liberman Agamez amassing an incredible haul of 38 points along the way to the final 3:2. Then Agamez set the pace also in the golden set and Arkas added another chapter to its unique story after taking the trophy of the Challenge Cup in that same venue 3 years ago.
This is another great achievement also for Canadian head coach Glenn Hoag who won Europe’s most elitist competition at the helm of France’s PARIS Volley back in 2001 and two years ago had qualified for the final four while mentoring Slovenia’s sensation ACH Volley BLED.

Yellow angels of Fenerbahce to challenge RC CANNES for classy final match

Baku, Azerbaijan, March 24, 2012. Two years after losing the final match to Italy’s Volley BERGAMO, Fenerbahce Universal ISTANBUL will be vying again for the trophy of Europe’s most elitist league after the stellar group mentored by Zé Roberto edged Dinamo KAZAN of Russia (3:1; 17-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-18) in the second semifinal played at “Heydar Aliyev” Sports and Concert Complex in Azerbaijan’s capital city. After losing, and quite clearly, the opening set to the ladies from Tatarstan, the “yellow angels” displayed some world-class and magic Volleyball to challenge RC CANNES in the deciding act of the competition, which will be a remake of the classy semifinal claimed by the Turks back in 2010 at “Palais des Victoires” as the French Riviera was playing host to the final four.

The close connection between Azerbaijan and Turkey is well known as the official languages of these countries are so similar that their respective citizens can easily understand each other while using their own idioms. Therefore it was not a real surprise to see the “Heydar Aliyev” Sports and Concert Complex in Baku getting gradually crowded by the fans of Fenerbahce, all wearing their yellow scarves or other gadgets produced by one of the most popular and successful multi-sports clubs in the world. The players from Turkey’s metropolis, Istanbul, had crashed the dreams of the local heroines representing Rabita BAKU in the 1/4 finals of the CEV Volleyball Champions League but still they were going to enjoy the full support of the Azeri audience in their semifinal match with Dinamo KAZAN. On the other side of the net, the Tatars – a rookie in Europe’s premier league – around Ekaterina Gamova had the ambitious goal to double up the victory of their friends from the men’s club of Zenit in last week’s final four in Lodz, something that would turn Kazan into the real Volleyball “Mecca” of the Old Continent. A small group of fans had traveled from Tatarstan to Azerbaijan’s capital city too, while Dinamo was going to be supported also by its mascot, a ladybird, which was standing next to the court already before the start of the game.

Yeah ! Because of the absurd play off system of Turkish Volleyball federation, now that federation is looking for teams to play in Turkish cup, they planned and excellent schedule this year

Well, there must be a reason for it. You now we have a tournament ahead for Olympics qualification and it´s a tight schedule. If they were to make it "first to win 3 games would win" then they need to plan for 5 games (worst case 3-2 rather than 3-0 ).

Turkey’s national women’s volleyball team will try to maintain its form when it rolls into the semifinals of the European qualification for the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Turkey has won all three of its games to lead Pool A, and will meet the runner-up of Pool B, which will be decided after the Netherlands plays Russia. The game was still in progress as the Hürriyet Daily News went to print on May 4.

Poland will meet Germany as the winner of Pool B, unless Russia beats the Netherlands in three sets. The winners of both semifinals will meet in the final on May 6. The qualifying tournament matches are being played in Ankara, the Turkish capital.

Turkey has not been represented at the Olympics in team sports since the 1960 Rome Olympics. Prior to that date, the country was represented six times in football and twice in basketball team. No Turkish volleyball team has played in the Olympics before.

May/05/2012

Note :  Hopefully this time we will play in the Olimpics in team sports.

Magic Turkish squad claims third consecutive gold medal
2012 CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship – Women

Ankara, Turkey, August 26, 2012. In front of 6’500 electrified spectators at Baskent Hall in Ankara, Turkey outclassed Serbia in straight sets (25-21, 25-22, 25-18) to win their third consecutive gold medal within two years in CEV and FIVB youth and junior competitions.

Only one year after their magical coups at 2011 CEV Youth Volleyball European Championship – Girls as well as at 2011 FIVB Volleyball Girls´ Youth World Championship, Turkish captain and Most Valuable Player Damla Cakiroglu led her team to an undisputed straight-set win versus 2010 runner-up Serbia (25-21, 25-22, 25-18) in today’s gold medal clash in Ankara. Best scorer of the match was Serbia’s captain Bianka Busa with 15 kills, whilst Kübra Akman scored twelve times for Turkey. The home squad booked ten aces, Serbia had only four.
In front of their famous home crowd, the promising Turkish talents started confidently, taking a merited 8-5 lead at the first technical break. Both teams showed some fantastic combinations at the net and outstanding defense actions. The main difference between the two adversaries at the start of today’s gold medal match was their serve. Turkey put a lot of pressure on the Serbian passers, but couldn’t stop Serbia bouncing back at 12-12 with a blistering Natasa Cikiriz winner from back row. However, Turkey kept cool to regain momentum at the second technical time-out (16-13). Serbia’s head coach Ratko Pavlicevic asked for a break at 13-17 to reorganize their game plan. At 21-23, 2010 runner-up Serbia had reduced the gap to two points, but it was already too late. Ceylan Arisan brought up set point with a quick combination on the right side, before Turkish setter Cagla Akin blocked Nikolina Lukic to give the host a hard-earned 1:0 set lead.
However, Serbia came back strongly. At the first technical time-out in set No. 2, the East Europeans already led 8-3. Captain Bianka Busa added some impressive winners to her scorers chart and the two Serbian middle-blockers Mina Popovic and Jelena Trnic were insurmountable at the net. At the second technical break, Serbia was still five points ahead. Turkey tried to take advantage of the imprecise passing of Serbian libero Nadica Dragutinovic, but her Serbian teammates helped her with some remarkable offensive actions. Nevertheless, Turkey came closer with six consecutive points to turn the tables at 19-17. It was the turning point of the second set. Turkey never looked back with Kübra Akman closing it out for the home squat at 25-22.
The story of the game didn’t change in the third set. Turkey jumped out for an 8-5 lead at the first technical stop. Serbia still struggled with passing, forcing setter Sladjana Mirkovic to slow down her game. As a consequence, the Turkish defense players showed some brilliant back court play. At the second technical time-out, the scoreboard already displayed a seven-point gap in Turkey’s favor. The team of head coach Gökhan Edman continued their run. Cakiroglu smashed for 21-13, before some rallies later Akman blocked for a 23-16 Turkish lead. Aktas brought up match point with an impressive winner on the right side, before a Serbian net touch bounced the Turkish ladies in heaven (25-18).

Turkish head coach Gökhan Edman: "My players made a fantastic job today. They followed our game plan from A to Z. I would like to congratulate my staff members and the Turkish Volleyball Federation for the great efforts they made."
Turkish captain Damla Cakiroglu: "We were ready for today´s game. We prepared very well. I guess, we played a great tournament and deserve the gold medal."
Serbia head coach Ratko Pavlicevic: "Congratulations to the Turkish team; they were the better team today. Thank you for hosting us, it was an great organization."
Serbia captain Bianka Busa: "I don´t know what to say. Congratulations to Turkey, they played better than we did today."

Turkey qualify for semis, Bulgaria relegated to classification matches

As the coaches predicted before the beginning of the tournament everything was still open in Pool II before the last day. Bulgaria, Spain and Turkey were all in position to book a ticket for the semi-finals in Poland, so one team had to be the joker and not make it. In the first match of the day Pool leaders Spain faced Bulgaria that was ranked second with one round still to go. Spain cemented their first place in the group by downing Bulgaria in straight sets (25-16, 25-23, and 25-2 to qualify for the semis as the first-ranked team of Pool II. Afterwards, Turkey cruised to a 3-1 win over Greece to be finally ranked second in the group, and this result - combined with the 3-1 win of Germany against Denmark - sends Greece home and sees Germany make it to the next phase to play the classification matches 5-8 together with Bulgaria, plus the third and fourth ranked teams of Pool I that will come to a close on Thursday.

Much was at stake in combination with the penultimate match of the prelims in Randers. As Bulgaria had lost in straight sets to Spain, Turkey could go past the Bulgarian team in the charts and claim the last spot for the semis with a 3:0 or 3:1 win against Greece. With this motivation in their minds Turkey was unstoppable and won the match 3:1 (25-20, 25-18, 18-25, 25-22).
The teams were all even in the beginning of the first set. Turkey led 8:7 at the first technical time-out. From here the Turkish team increased their lead to 16:9 by the second. The Turks seemed much focused with good reception, strong attacks and solid blocks. Throughout the set they delivered a great performance and won it 25-20.
It was like Turkey was playing at home ground with a lot of Turkish supporters on the tribune in Skyline Arena giving great support to their team. The waterproof blocks from the tough Turks continued in the second set and gave them an 8:5 lead by the first technical time-out and 16:12 by the second. Turkey’s opposite Metin Toy put the Greek’s finger strength to the test many times during the set and the match making 11 points. Turkey won the second set 25-18.
Greece was much stronger in the third set leading 8:6 at the first technical time-out and 16:13 by the second. Behind 14:18 Turkey’s head coach Ali Kazim Hidayetoglu called a time-out trying to turn the set over in Turkey’s favor. It did not work as planned and behind 14:20 Ali Kazim Hidayetoglu called another break. No way back in this set for Turkey, Greece won it 25-18.
The intensity rose in the fourth set. Turkey took the lead 8:4 by the first technical time-out with some strong attacks. The Turkish constellation of two or more of their two meter guys Toy, Sahin, Günes, Gökgöz and Senol in the block made Greece have a hard time finding a way through and Turkey led 16:11 by the second technical time-out. Though the set got close (24:22) Turkey kept cool and won the fourth set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
With three points Turkey goes past Bulgaria in the table and claims the second and last spot for the semifinals 1-4.
