Turkis airlines flight attendants on a diet otherwise fired!

Yesterday it was in the paper that flight attendants of Turkish Airlines are forced to go on a diet to measure certain sizes. They get some time unpaid leave to loose the weight and if they don´t get the proper weight they are fired. It sounds a bit strange but on the otherhand it makes sense that you cannot have overweight flightattendants. In case of evacuation or emergency the flight attandent must have good health and not block the doorways or emergency exits.

It´s not that shocking actually. When you become a flight attendent, you have to have a certain height and weight, it is stated in the contract! And this is the case for every airline, not just the Turkish ones
Is it just me, or is the guy in the article kind of heavy... He needs to lose 22 pounds, to reach 211 pounds...so he´s 233 pounds, that´s about 105 kilogram! Wow...

Not sure if it still applies, but to become an air hostess in the UK the woman must be no more than a UK size 12 because of the restriction in space in the aircraft.

They don´t throw them out... They will work for the company, but on the ground, no longer in the airplane. It has a lot to do with safety in the airplane.

Not many people get fat because of an illness.... most get fat because they eat to much. I don´t know about other countries, but in the UK you could not get sacked because you are too fat to be in the airplane but you would be moved to other duties. We have very strict employment laws, equality laws and discrimination laws - in fact we have a law for most things

Slightly off-topic but i find is strange how obese people generally get better treatment than people starving themselves to size 0. I don´t think anyone would object to emaciated flight attendand being fired for not being able to do their job, yet, people object to obese person suffering the same fate.
I remember the fuss a few years ago when British social services took a child who was too obese from his family. Would people do so much fuss if the family were underfeeding him? I don´t think so.
We all know it´s unhealthy to go either way and neither lifestyle should be promoted. Yet, you can see people who can hardly walk wear "Proud to be fat" t-shirts and look down on half-starved gals whose head is bigger than their hips. Well, a bit like a pot calling the kettle black

Interesting, it seems like that obese people always have an excuse to be that fat.
In 98% of the cases if you are too fat you eat too much and exercise too little! People who are fat often suffer from very low selfestime and food is there ´only friend´. Anyway this is off topic.

Not realy, it is a fact that being too fat is like I wrote just a matter of too much eating and too little excercise. Also it is scientificly proven that if you are overweight as teenager you will always be like that as adult. But this is another story and not suitable for Turkish Classs.
Have a nice weekend,

How can flight attendants get fat when they are constantly on their feet? Dont you see them working? Constantly pushing the troleys with expensive food and drinks, later on perfumes and gadgets? Then some self-centred passengers calling them. I find their work quite hard.

I don´t agree. There is a bigger chance that you will be overweight as an adult. This does not mean that this is ALWAYS the case. I know a lot of people who were overweight as a teenager who got themselves into shape after some years.

I won´t bet my head on it, but I recall reading somewhere that the number of fat cells you will have forms when you´re a toddler. Of course, later on you may control your weight by means of diet and exercise but it´ll result in the fat cells being flat, not in doing away with them. If you´re a slim toddler, the chances are you´ll be less prone to being overweight later on. So, at the end of the day, it´s the parents you can blame everything on

I know this person who works out every day, is a vegetarian, does not eat junk food or fatty foods, no pastries and the doctors say she is overweight. She is 173 cm tall and weights 100 kilos. Turns out she has a high bone mass.
On an extra note Marylin Monroe was a size 14, by today´s standard she would be considered overweight back then it was considered voluptuous. Today´s fashion, you have to look like a heroin addict to be the "perfect" size 0.
My friend from Venezuela has a saying, bones are for dogs I prefer meat, meaning he like a woman that is healthy and has curves than a woman that is skin and bones.

- Marylin Monroe was 167 centimeter, and 54 kilogram. I don´t know American or English dress sizes, but that´s a BMI of 19,4. That is considered a healthy weight, even in the lower regions of the healthy weight spectrum. According to doctors she wouldn´t be overweight today. Perhaps she would be considered "round" by Hollywood, but so is Scarlet Johanson. What is "in" in fashion is not "in" in every day life. I don´t want to look like a size zero, because I prefer to have some fat left to create a behind and some breasts And I think most men don´t like to look at a size zero either. When I look at the eyes of sleezy men, the always follow the round behinds and curvy bodies, not the walking clothes-hangers.
- To have a weight of 100 kilo at 1,73 meter (exactly my height!), just because of big bones is almost impossible. Bones account for about 5 kilo´s in the average person. Being 100 kilo would mean she has about 500% bigger bones than normal people. If she really lives as healthy as you say, I would advise her to see a specialist. The bones story just isn´t enough, and being that heavy on a healthy diet means something is wrong. She can have some kind of hidden defect! Especially with the work outs and everything... Often the weight is a sign that something else is not working properly.

The person in question just got a perfect bill of health from the doctors. The weight of a person is not just comprised of the fatty weight but muscle and bone mass also. This girl used to be a big sportif in college. Yes she may need to louse another 10 kilos but to say that she is obesses like she has been told is untrue.
Why is it that if someone is on the round side people think they over eat?
In some countries a round woman is a sign that her husband is prosperous, in other words that he is well off and take care of his woman. The steriotipical view that a woman should be skinny is not healthy, it cause young girls to develop eating dissorders. There are diffrent body types and some are made to be heavier than others. And frankly I would rather like to see a flight attendant that has a certain musculation than be skinny. The skinny flight attendant could not possibly be usefull in a crissis situation since her body is so thin and muscle strengh comprimised because of the weight loss.

It´s hard to believe that a person 1.73cm tall would weigh 100kg in spite of eating healthily. Unless that person is a body builder, then I can believe it. A person of heavy built and average muscle structure would never weigh that much without being simply fat.
I don´t know why people defend fat people by criticising skeletons. Isn´t it true that any kind of extreme is bad? The fact that people with eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia not only look terrible but also ruin their health, does not change the fact that so do obese people. I suppose everyone should aim at being healthy and keeping their BMI at a reasonable level

The weight that flight attendents need is also not too skinny. They have to have a certain BMI, which I think is normal. You have to draw the line somewhere because an airplane is a crowded, small place. Why not draw it at ´healthy´ and ´able to move easily in the narrow path´? They don´t demand this weight for fashion purposes.

I agree with you daydreamer but it is easy to say that someone is fat because they are lazy or eat bad and do not take care of themselve but why do people that are anorexic are taken pity of and are said to have eating dissorders and should be helped and that fat people are just lazy and they need to exercise. I am having difficulty wrapping my head around this.
And yes flight attendands should be able to move around without difficulty on the planes but to stop them from working and witholding their pay until they louse the weight is not good either. This will only promote unhealthy weight loss either by starving themselves or purging.
I am sorry if I am pationate about this by my best friend is morbidly obese and it pains me to see her that way. She exercises and eats healthy and the doctors says there are no reasons for her obeseness.
Anyways I think we were all saying the same thing just in diffrent ways, a healthy lifestyle is always better. But admit it people, a good pastry is heavenly once in a while

I would agree if this was a first warning. But the article states that the people in question had been warned before. If they did not listen to the warnings, what else can the company do? Being fit enough for your job is a responsibility of the employee. I have some problems with giving them this timeframe of 6 months though. For some people losing weight in a healthy way might be possible in this time, for others it might not. In any case, perhaps a ground job is better for these people. If they don´t want to, or can´t lose the weight they can always let the company know this and be restated on the ground. Saves them not having pay for 6 months!
