Emir Kusturica’s political views caused scandal in Turkey

October 09, 2010 | 16:54

Turkish Culture Minister Ertugrul Gunay stated he would not participate in the Golden Orange International Film Festival, as famous Serbian director Emir Kusturica is one of the jury members.

Invitation of Emir Kusturica displeased Turks, as well as a number of film makers, directors and representatives of women organizations of Bosnia due to his pro-Serbian position during war in former Jugoslavia.

Protesting against Kusturic’s invitation, Turkish director Semih Kaplanoglu withdrew his drama “Bal” (Honey) from the festival. A number of Turkish cultural figures, political and non-governmental organizations slammed the festival organizers as well.

Ahh well - nevermind

It´s good to stand up for what you believe in

Emir is OK...His point is that the number of Bosnian women recently raped by Serbs. is not nearly as high as people claim..... That is not so bad, is it?

This is quite a tough call really...

Obviously, he has really strong nationalistic opinions... If I was a Serb, I would definitely would not hesitate a second to call him a racist. What he said was indefensible!! But before he left, he really lashed out the Cultural Minister and the other director (he said, if that director is very much against the genocides, why did he not say anything what happened to Armenians).

The strange thing is he was invited by CHP local government and the cultural minister is from AKP.. CHP is normally much more nationalistic than AKP which is islamists.. And strangely enough MHP was the leading the protests.. (MHP is the ultra right party. They can easily  get ´the golden orange´-which is the prize of Antalya film festival- at any given time for ´racism´

I think he should have stayed but the protests should have kept going at the back ground with less threatening fashion (but when MHP is involved, there is always danger.. That was the reason Kusturica said ´you can not talk about the art while there are 50 body guards in the room´..

Kusturica quits film festival jury in Turkey

Kusturica left and I hope everyone is happy now.

I wonder who´s brilliant idea was to invite him at all, knowing his nationality and his "political views". There are so many directors all around the world.
