Kusturica quits film festival jury in Turkey

Kusturica left and I hope everyone is happy now.

I wonder who´s brilliant idea was to invite him at all, knowing his nationality and his "political views". There are so many directors all around the world.

A while ago, there was a little bitterness between me and a Serbian member Slavica over the Serbian role in the mass killings and atrocities committed during the war in former Yugoslavia.

As expected, we Turks instantly support Palestinians against the Jews, Bosnians against the Serbs and Azeris against Armenians. We also don´t call the presence of our troops in Cyprus as an act of invasion. We show all the healthy examples of how biased a nation can be when it comes to her own interests. This is not peculiar to Turkey.

In matters like this, powers that be tend to declare a common enemy, the shadow of Satan on Earth who is capable of doing any malice. This person is collectively rendered indefensible and his very presence sets a basis of justification for any further military action to be held by those powers. Remember Hitler, Saddam, Milosevic and Castro just to name a few. This way or another, these people were involved in actions or plans against the major powers in the world. Doubtlessly sinful, the deeds of these men were written by their captors who were themselves far from being innocent. Logically, there might have been many omissions, exaggerations, fabrication and bias in the way they are presented to the masses. Nevertheless, you can´t even defend this suspicion. In some parts of Europe (I don´t know how many) it is illegal to deny the Holocaust. During the war in Iraq, we witnessed journalists losing their jobs on declaring they did not share the suspicion over Iraq and Saddam. Likewise, there might be other hidden realities about the war in Bosnia. We don´t know everything, we just believe in what we are presented with.

The punch-line is, there is a well-known strategy of satanizing the enemy. I can´t even say all the major examples of that is done by the West in fear of wide spread protests within Turkish Class.

I must make a correction about Castro. The phrase ".... doubtlessly sinful.." does not refer to him.

Enraged Serbian filmmaker leaves Turkey

October 11, 2010 | 10:18

The Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica, who had been invited to Altın Portakal (Golden Orange) International Film Festival as a jury member, was enraged by the statements addressed to him by Turkish art critics and politicians. He has left Turkey.

Before leaving, the filmmaker held a press conference and severely criticized Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Ertuğrul Günay, who stated he would not take part in the festival because of the Serbian filmmaker. Kusturica said he considers the Turkish minister “an enemy” because of his behavior.

Kusturica also noted that just a few months ago he and his No Smoking Orchestra visited Bursa for a live performance, where they were greeted warmly and enthusiastically by the city’s officials. So what has happened since, that made the Minister refuse to attend the festival because of Kusturica, asked the filmmaker.

The Serbian producer also sharply responded to the well-known Turkish film producer Semih Kaplanoğlu, who announced on Thursday that he had withdrawn his film from the festival, as Kusturica was on the jury for the international competition. If Mr. Kaplanoğlu is so sensitive about genocides, why he does not speak of the Armenian Genocide during World War I. Thus he would have added crimes against humanity to his sensitivity. The Serbian filmmaker stated he has always voiced his attitude to the crimes against humanity committed in Bosnia. The Serbians were against the crimes as well, and many Serbians were murdered in Bosnia.

The Antalya Foundation for Culture and Art (AKSAV), an Antalya Metropolitan Municipality-affiliated body, which has been organizing the Altın Portakal for the past two years, had announced Kusturica’s taking part in the festival in late July. However, his presence in the festival sparked ire during the past week, with several Bosnian cultural associations based in Turkey and a number of Bosnian women’s associations voicing criticism of AKSAV for inviting the filmmaker who once made comments supportive of war criminals responsible for the Srebrenica massacre in 1995 during the Bosnian war, to Antalya, Today’s Zaman reports.

In protest at Kusturica’s participation in the festival, Semih Kaplanoğlu, the director of the Berlin film festival Golden Bear-winning drama “Bal” (Honey), announced on Thursday that he had withdrawn his film from the festival. Some Turkish public and political figures, as well as workers of culture, were critical of the festival organizers as well.

The festival will last until October 14.
