Brazilian playmaker Alex asks PM for Turkish citizenship

Spor Toto Super League side Fenerbahçe’s Brazilian captain-playmaker Alex de Souza has conveyed his wish to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to become a Turkish citizen.

Erdoğan accepted Alex and Fenerbahçe President Aziz Yıldırım at the Prime Ministry yesterday. At the gathering Alex personally asked the prime minister to become a Turkish citizen. Upon this request, Erdoğan jokingly asked Alex whether he had picked a Turkish name. Yıldırım gifted Erdoğan with four jerseys as the prime minister presented ties to his guests.

Even if the Brazilian star acquires Turkish citizenship, he will not be eligible to play for the Turkish national football team because he has already played for the Brazilian team. The 33-year-old has been playing for Fenerbahçe since 2004 and has scored more than 100 goals in these seven years. He renewed his contract with the İstanbul team on Feb. 9, 2011. Alex is accepted as one of the best foreign footballers who have played in Turkish football leagues. He has an important role in Fenerbahçe’s two domestic championship wins in 2005 and 2007. Another successful foreigner serving Turkish sports, Montenegrin-Italian coach Bogdan Tanjevic, under whose helm the Turkish national basketball team became the silver medalist in the 2010 World Basketball Championship held in Turkey, was granted Turkish citizenship along with his family last week upon President Abdullah Gül’s approval.

Fenerbahçe footballer Alex de Souza was granted Turkish citizenship, Lig TV reported on Tuesday.

The Brazilian star, who is also the captain for Fenerbahçe, last month officially applied and made his wish clear while visiting Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan along with Fenerbahçe chairman Aziz Yıldırım.

The football captain’s name on Turkish ID card will be “Aleks,” spelled the way his name is pronounced in Turkish. Phew!

"Aleks"...to be honest I was hoping him to choose an original Turkish name like Ali, Ahmet, Mehmet...etc...{#emotions_dlg.think} anyways..

Alex is short for alexander and it´s turkish version is iskender and it´s often shortened to iski. And you know we like to add -cim to the names: iskicim. {#emotions_dlg.lol_fast} (see Levent Kırca)

He has been in TR for about 7 years, his daughter is receiving education in Turkish schools and speaks Turkish fluently, his other daughters were all born in TR, he is a model for other players with his family life, and the most important thing is with his desire, he wanted to be a Turkish citizen...

It´s meaningless to ask him to change the name given to him by his parents. Since there is no "x" letter in our alphabet just fix it and that´s it. What more else?

Agree ... I just changed the spelling of my name when I got citizenship.
