But you're not completely wrong, but it depends on the sentence.
*They were very ill.
There are two ways of consructing this sentence in turkish: "Onlar çok hastalardı", "Onlar çok hastaydılar". In fact, it's "hasta idiler".
*But if you want to make up such a sentence: Gelenler dünkü hastalardı (in fact "hasta olanlardı" not "hasta idiler") hasta: the ill one, noun. (the one that is ill)
The ones that came were the ill ones of yesterday.
"The ones that came were very ill." (hasta= ill, adjective)
Gelenler çok hastaydılar/hastalardı.
I find it like this, I hope it's so Maybe, there's not such a distinction but it seems so to me.

Quoting Elisa: I understand what you mean
But this is what my teacher told us
hastaydım
hastaydın
hastaydı
hastaydık
hastaydınız
hastalardı
In an example like that one, I'd think it should have been hastaydılar in the 3rd person plural case..... |
Both would be correct, because here hasta is adjective, but I agree that your teacher should have preferred "hastaydılar" here, as it's compatible with the others.

HASTAYDILAR and HASTALARDI are same for all practical purposes.
If you want to be hair splitting however, here is my own interpretation of a possible difference..Dont ask me to prove it.
If I say HASTAYDILAR...They were sick, when I left them: for all I know they are still sick. (not in very far past)
If I say HASTALARDI....They were sick in summer of 1991: for all I know they must have recovered or died by now.

No, dear AlphaF, I never meant to be a smartass pedantic hair splitting person. That is against my nature really
I appreciate your post very much, as I appreciated the other ones. I was just confused.
Thanks very much to all of you.
