...nothing wrong with ´laughed to themselves´ - this is what a native speaker would say!  Translation shouldn´t always be totally literal should it?

Nice of you to look at it, Adam25. I wish English speakers would correct me more. I use many funny ways in order to find the right English expressions but after all it is just shooting in the dark.

Forgetting the spelling error and that the preposition that goes with the verb "to laugh" is "at" and not "to", "laughed at themselves" can be roughly translated into Turkish as "kendilerine güldüler"; meaning whoever was laughing was laughing at his/her own self.

That however, is not what is said in the transladed text. The translated text says " içten içe sinsice güldüler", talking about certain people laughing at the speaker, slyly and hiding his/her laughter.

So much from a native speaker....

And I think to myself: what a wonderful world.

Thank you Abla - despite what that fount of all knowledge AlphaF has said, ´to laugh to oneself/himself/herself/themselves´ is a perfectly acceptable expression in English and doesn´t (obviously) mean the same as ´to laugh at.

The ´spelling error´ was a typo which I carelessly overlooked.  I see you are equally capable of making them yourself.  

The English expression ´to laugh at´ has a different meaning to ´to laugh to (oneself/themselves etc)´ which means keeping the laughter ´hidden´.

Please don´t presume to tell me how to speak my own language. 

I can not find a definition for the verb "to laugh to" in any of the dictionaries available to me. I would appreciate a link to this definition, if possible.

I doubt if your reference is to a linguistic dictionary.

It looks more like an "abreviations list" for computer chatters.
