I know the most recommendable style in this site is denying the value of everything. Like the value of 60 years of peace on the continent as well as whole generations being raised with no fear of bloodshed. EU had a great role both in the reconstruction after WW II and in the peaceful end of cold war.
Sorry but this is important for me.

My attempt to translate Beyinsiz´s tweet:
AB Nobel Barış Ödülünü sonuna kadar hak ediyor. Adamlar Srebrenica Filistin ve pek çok yerde katliamlar olurken bile kavgadan uzak durdular.
EU deserves Nobel Peace Prize to the full extent. Those guys stay out of any struggle, even in the face of massacres in Srebrenica, Palestine and many other places.
Seems to me that both Abla and Beyinsiz are right here. IMO, Europe (not necessarily EU itself) can be proud of:
* being able to cooperate even a few years after end of WW2
* it´s constant effort to build multicultural society (though we could debate what was more important here for Europeans - true commitment to idea of multiculturalism or economical reasons)
* and Schengen area. From one point of view, it may look like an isolated district for riches, if we compare the world to one big city. On the other hand, I wonder if there´s anything similar to Schengen area anywhere in the world, on similar scale. I hope that one day everyone will be able to go wherever they want, without being controlled/checked/directed/asked about anything by anyone.
But that´s also true - wars in former Yugoslavia could last for such a long time in 90´s, in the face of whole Europe; and nobody could do anything about this.

Let´s just take a hundred years back in time. All the wars and oppression were still to come. I have lived with people who had to go through it all and the wounds were long lasting. Still it feels now like it must have happened a very long time ago.
In my opinion European Union deserves to be praised for its acchievements especially at present when the economical crisis has taken all our attention. The Nobel prize reminds us what the Union was originally created for.
In my opinion, two things in present day Europe may put its reputation as a peace maker in danger:
1. EU countries officially exported weapons for the worth of 31,7 milliard euros in 2010. Probably the number is much bigger because the countries have not reached an agreement on how this trade should be reported.
2. EU does not represent a common voice. A European citizen has not been born. Instead, national interests are playing a more and more important role in common decisions. The rich north is blaiming the poor south of something and vice versa. EU has not been able to keep the extreme right and ultranationalist forces under control.
tomac, your share of the prize is 0,23 cents.

Racism is a big problem in Europe. And EU is still a christian club.

At least they could accept Bosnia instead of Turkey as a gesture because they didn´t do anything when Bosnians were victims of a genocide. This would also help EU to improve its peaceful image

Racism is a problem in most part of the world, even in Turkey, Europe is not an exception.
EU may be a christian club, no problem for me. There are many clubs all over the world. You can attemp to join them whichever you like. But if you were rejected more than one time based on unimportant issues, you should stop attempting to join there and look for better clubs! if you have azıcık şeref, haysiyet! kaldıysa tabii!

Will never happen, Bush has a warrant for his arrest for war crimes if he leaves the USA

Europe owes this honor largely to Dutch guards in Serebranitza, who preferred to abandon the Bosnians entrusted to them without firing a shot....to protect the peace, of course.

technicly, any police corp can arrest him since the arrest mandate is international, when he came to Canada in the fall of 2011 it would should have been the RCMP(Royal Canadian Mounted Police) but noting was done. He was supposed to go to Switzerland that same year but he was given a warning that if he went toSwitzerland he would be arrested so Bush canceled his plans.
