They are two nameless heroes of Gallipoli war. In fact , we call them all as one name " Mehmetcik" [Mehmet] .. It is the name we call the "Turkish Soldier" .
May they rest in peace.

Yes, I agree, it could not be called luxuries because they weren´t sitting on their bums in front of their computers making comments like we do now. They were too busy with defending our country.

Here is another picture for you, this time with a little story.
The picture shows 15 year old Seniors of ISTANBUL LYCEE (then called Sultani Highschool), who volunteered for the front, in difficult days of the war.
All of the boys in the picture lost their lives trying to stop an enemy attack on the night 18 May to 19 May 1915, defending a hill called Kabatepe.
None returned back to theır school, which was painted in yellow to disguise it as a hospital against possible air bombardment.
Younger students, in their grief for their older brothers, painted every wood ornament in school in black.
This school is still in service and boys of the school (actually the school now has girl students as well) and an associated football team sill proudly flies Yellow- Black colors in ceremonial days.

That is what I meant when I was saying ´the need of boasting´.
http://wowturkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=106949
This is a Turkish website and it says the picture is a fake picture. Actually the picture was mentioned as a fake picture long time ago.
The lesson:
We Turks, dont need fake pictures to be proud of our past!!
We certainly dont need unnecessary sentimentality. Because there is no limit to it!! This boasting does not stop with simple boasting, the next step in this process is to look around and check any Turks who are not trembling with the emotions and accuse them being unpatriotic!!

That is what I meant earlier..
This is the other step : Accusing others from being another nation as if other nations are not worthy.
Two soldiers´ picture seems to be a fake picture. Why dont you accept it and apologise.
As I said, we Turks dont need anything FAKE to be proud of ourselves.. Abit of knowledge in our history would be enough.

Thanks Tunci. Huzur içinde yat Mehmetçikler.
Living in Australia we have a huge national awareness of the war. I think its interesting as the battle was a defining moment in both Turkish and Australian history.
There is a lot of information available both in turkish and english on the anzac website for anyone who is interested

Turks had to sacrifice the best part (most educated, most able bodied) of their population in this war.
The question that most Turks seem to avaid on this issue is "WHY DID WE HAVE TO DEFEND THE STRAIT IN THE FIRST PLACE ? WAS GALLIPOLI WAR INEVITABLE OR THE RESULT OF SOME IDIOTIC OR PERHAPS TREACHEROUS POLITICAL MANIPULATIONS"
My own question is "WHY dont we like to discuss this point?"
Anyone with answers ?

Today is a special and meaningful day for us. It is Martyrs´ Day, remembering all Martyrs that died for this country.

May they all rest in peace...I have known some of those boy soldiers as grown men, the ones who lived. The scars were deep, they were haunted all their lives, too often reliving the horrors of war..
