Hi I was wondering if anyone can help me understand the use of the -tadır suffix after some verbs.

eg) Ayasofya Türkiye´nin İstanbul ilinde yer almaktadır.

I think this is a very formal suffix beause I only see it in articles and news sites, but I dont really understand the grammar behind it.

If anyone can provide more examples that would be really helpfull too.

Thanks

Yes it is a very formal usage. And I think it is not a gramatically correct usage. Instead of it using present continous tense would be better.

Analysis:

git-mek-te-dir

git - root of the verb

gitmek - to go or going

gitmekte - on going

gitmektedir - he/she/it is on going

İnstead of saying gitmektedir (he is on going), it is better to say gidiyor (he is going)

so applying the locative suffix (de/da te/ta) onto the end of the infinitive form of a verb has the same meaning as the present continuous tense?

gitmekte = gidiyor?
