I was doing an exercise on livemocha

Kadın kahverengi, kıvırcık saçlı.
Adam saçlı yok. O kel.
Kız kızıl, düz saçlı.
Oğlan siyah, kısa saçlı.
Ben uzun, düz sarı saçlıyım.
Sen siyah saçlısın.

and then a turkish girl corrected my mistakes..

there was one mistake she said

"Adam saçlı yok. O kel." should be "Adamın saçı yok"

i asked her why but i didnt understood her explanation for it.

i want to know why should it be "adamin" and not "adam"

becuz the others are not "kadinin" and so on.

and why should it be saci and not sacli like in the others??

whats so special about this specific sentence?? i really wanna know

exactly why so i can learn it and not make the same mistake again.

and then another guy said it should be "Adam saçlı değil. O kel."

why did he said so much different than her??

and i thought "degil" should only be used in sentences with a verb??

There are two different kinds of sentences here:

1. Sen siyah saç|lı|sın.

saç|lı = NOUN + ADJECTIVE DERIVATOR ´haired´ (like Sw hår|ig)

siyah saçlı ´black haired´ (like Sw svart|hår|ig)

> ´you are black haired´

2. Adam|ın saç|ı yok.

This is a normal possessive construction, GEN + POSS + var/yok.

´The man has no hair´ lit. ´The man´s hair+his is non-existent.´ (Sw. Mannen har inget hår.)

Personally I can see no reason why *Adam saçlı değil could not mean the same, it is quite logical, but we just have to believe this is the Turkish way to say it.

as I have noticed they use to say

uzun/ kısa saçlı- with long/ short hair

siyah/ kıvırck saçlı - with blak/curly hair....and so on..

but in this exemple they use the genitive form

adamın saçı yok - there is no hair of man 

maybe you can say adam saçlı değil - the men is not hairly..but I am not quite sure...

"Adam saçlı değil" means the same...

you can say

* Adamın saçı yok

* Adam saçsız

* Adam saçlı değil
