I was doing an exercise on livemocha
Kadın kahverengi, kıvırcık saçlı. Adam saçlı yok. O kel. Kız kızıl, düz saçlı. Oğlan siyah, kısa saçlı. Ben uzun, düz sarı saçlıyım. Sen siyah saçlısın.
and then a turkish girl corrected my mistakes..
there was one mistake she said
"Adam saçlı yok. O kel." should be "Adamın saçı yok"
i asked her why but i didnt understood her explanation for it.
i want to know why should it be "adamin" and not "adam"
becuz the others are not "kadinin" and so on.
and why should it be saci and not sacli like in the others??
whats so special about this specific sentence?? i really wanna know
exactly why so i can learn it and not make the same mistake again.
and then another guy said it should be "Adam saçlı değil. O kel."
why did he said so much different than her??
and i thought "degil" should only be used in sentences with a verb??
pls explain this to me i would be very grateful...!!
"Adamın saçı yok"
Adam + ın [´s]
saç + ı [his hair]
yok = do not exist
literally ; the man´s hair does not exist
in proper English wording ; The man has no hair. [ The man doesn´t have hair]
====================================
If you say ; "Adam saçı yok " that means " Man no his hair " but we want to say " Man has no hair " ---> Adamın saçı yok.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"Adam saçlı değil. ----> Literally ; The man is with hair not.
in proper English wording ; The man is without hair.
=====================================
In the end, if we compare two forms ;
The man has no hair = The man is without hair
They both says the same thing.
=======================================
There used to be a joke way of stating the two things are not different between from each other , that is ;
Ha Ali kel ha kel ali . ----> Ali kel or kel Ali . ---> That means Ali is kel , no matter how you say it, that won´t change the fact that Ali´s being kel.
And in your example, saying without hair and having no hair leads us to a one fact that is HE HAS NO HAIR. !
