If he is over 15, you should not ignore it as a joke if you ask me..
You should speak to him and you should be quite firm..If you dont, there is a chance that he was talking about it to his friends and you might be labeled as all sorts of things..
Of course, it is just my idea..
The man is 48, divorced and living as a single parent with his daughter!
I do like him as an enthousiastic student, but this behaviour - even when we all in class joke at lot - makes me feeling very unfortable. If it is true, I think he should leave school - as there is no other class of his level than the one I teach, if it is not true, will I not make a fool of myself to start a serious conversation?

you should talk with him after class, ask him what the message means. if the kid states it´s a joke or if you consider it, act mature and say it is not something you appreciate or tollerate and lest he wants his parents called, he should stop immedialty and forever with it. If he says he really feels like that, you should take some moments to act mature and mother-like with him. Talk to him about life and love in general. After all, at this age these kind of crushes hide emotional disorders and lack of mother care. (i am posting without reading the further comments on this). good luck!
Above was a joke, but now I am very serious: I received a text message from that same student saying: ´I love you.´ I am convinced for 99% that he is joking but what if - that 1% doubt - he is not? I deleted it and I did not answer it but what should I do when he is in my class the next time? Should I tell him not to send texts like that anymore? Should I ignore it and act as if he did not sent it? Should I .... Advice please!!

hmmm... i read the next part, too.
Ignoring him is what is either hurtful for him or embarassing for you-if a joke- as an unsolved problem. Leaving school? why on erath´s sake? because an innocent sms? maybe you should leve school... if not able to deal more intimate situations with a student... Being an adult asks for acting like one. you are talking like you were in love with him, too! He should leave school... C´mon!

Maybe you should read more before you reply, portokal, with such judgement. It wasn´t the first time he said something like this. Besides you have no idea what type of school I teach.
